CHAPTER 2: THE WOMAN WHO DISAPPEARED TO SAVE HIS CHILD

The paper trembled in Luca Moretti's hand.
Not because of the cold.
Not because of fear.
Because of four words.
Lila is your daughter.
For a man who had survived gang wars, federal investigations, assassination attempts, and betrayals from people he once called brothers, nothing had ever prepared him for that sentence.
He looked down.
The little girl stared back at him.
Confused.
Patient.
Waiting.
As though she had no idea that his entire world had just shattered.
His daughter.
The child who spent four hours asking him impossible questions on a plane.
The child who offered him cookies.
The child who laughed at his terrible jokes.
The child who held his sleeve during turbulence.
His daughter.
Luca suddenly saw everything differently.
The eyes.
The curls.
The stubborn chin.
Even the way she crossed her arms when she wanted answers.
Pieces that meant nothing before now formed a picture so obvious it hurt.
Lila tilted her head.
"Are you okay?"
His throat tightened.
No.
He wasn't okay.
He had just lost eight years.
Eight birthdays.
Eight Christmas mornings.
Eight first days of school.
Eight years of scraped knees, bedtime stories, and moments he would never get back.
Yet somehow he forced himself to smile.
Barely.
"I don't know."
The honesty surprised both of them.
Across the terminal, Emma stood frozen.
Watching.
Waiting.
Terrified.
The man beside her noticed.
His eyes narrowed.
Then he followed her gaze.
Straight to Luca.
The man's expression changed instantly.
Recognition.
Concern.
Alarm.
Luca noticed all three.
And didn't like any of them.
Not one bit.
He folded the note carefully.
Placed it inside his coat.
Then took Lila's small hand.
A strange feeling spread through his chest.
Protective.
Instinctive.
Ancient.
As though some hidden part of him had always known.
Always waited.
Always belonged to her.
"Dad?"
The word slipped out accidentally.
Not directed at him.
Not intentionally.
Lila immediately covered her mouth.
Embarrassed.
"I'm sorry."
Luca's heart nearly stopped.
"What for?"
Her cheeks turned pink.
"I was just trying it."
The world tilted.
Trying it.
As though she had practiced the word alone.
As though she wondered how it might feel.
As though she had waited her whole life to say it.
Luca swallowed hard.
Then crouched in front of her.
"You never have to apologize for that."
Tears immediately filled her eyes.
Children always know.
Maybe not the details.
Maybe not the reasons.
But they know when something important changes.
And something had.
A lot.
Behind them, Emma suddenly started walking.
Fast.
Toward them.
The man followed.
Luca rose to his feet.
His instincts returning.
Danger first.
Emotions later.
Emma stopped a few feet away.
Neither spoke.
Eight years stood between them.
Eight years of questions.
Eight years of silence.
Eight years of pain.
And somehow neither knew where to begin.
Finally Emma whispered:
"You read it."
Luca laughed bitterly.
"That's an understatement."
Her eyes filled with tears.
"I'm sorry."
The words sounded genuine.
Painfully genuine.
Which somehow made everything worse.
The man beside her stepped forward.
"Emma."
Luca immediately disliked his tone.
Protective.
Familiar.
Too familiar.
Emma shook her head.
"It's okay."
The man didn't look convinced.
Luca folded his arms.
"Who is he?"
The question landed heavily.
Emma hesitated.
Then answered.
"His name is Noah."
Luca waited.
Nothing else came.
Interesting.
Very interesting.
Because women don't introduce the man they're dating like that.
Just his name.
No explanation.
No relationship label.
No emotional connection.
Luca noticed.
And so did Noah.
The tension became immediate.
Visible.
Dangerous.
Lila looked between them.
Then sighed dramatically.
Adults.
Complicated creatures.
Thirty minutes later they sat in a private room near airport security.
The attempted attack had elevated everything.
Police wanted answers.
So did Luca.
A lot of answers.
Emma sat across from him.
Lila sat beside him.
Not beside Emma.
Beside him.
That tiny choice affected him more than he wanted to admit.
Noah stood near the door.
Watching.
Listening.
Protecting.
Again.
Luca didn't like it.
Again.
Finally he looked directly at Emma.
"Start talking."
Silence.
Then Emma nodded.
Fair enough.
She owed him that.
At minimum.
"Eight years ago," she began quietly, "I didn't leave because I wanted to."
Luca's jaw tightened.
"Then why?"
Emma looked toward Lila.
As if gathering strength from her.
Then back to him.
"Because someone tried to kill me."
The room froze.
Luca stared.
"No."
Emma nodded.
"Yes."
The answer came without hesitation.
Without drama.
Without exaggeration.
Which made it worse.
Much worse.
"When?"
"The night I disappeared."
Luca felt something cold settle inside him.
Because he remembered that night.
Perfectly.
The restaurant.
The rain.
The plans they made.
The apartment they were supposed to move into together.
Then nothing.
Emma vanished.
Gone.
Without explanation.
Without goodbye.
Without a trace.
And now she was telling him someone tried to murder her.
"Who?"
Emma closed her eyes.
Then whispered a name.
"Vincent Romano."
The room became silent.
Dead silent.
Because Luca knew exactly who that was.
Everyone in his world knew.
Vincent Romano.
One of the most ruthless crime bosses on the East Coast.
A man feared even among criminals.
A man responsible for countless disappearances.
A man who hated Luca Moretti.
The realization hit instantly.
"This was about me."
Emma nodded.
Tears appeared again.
"Yes."
Luca looked away.
Anger rising.
Not at Emma.
At himself.
Because he should have known.
Should have anticipated it.
Should have protected her.
Emma continued.
"Vincent discovered I was pregnant."
The words landed heavily.
Lila lowered her eyes.
She knew this story.
At least part of it.
Emma's voice trembled.
"He believed a child would make you vulnerable."
Luca felt sick.
Because Vincent would absolutely think that way.
Children.
Family.
Love.
All weaknesses in men like Vincent Romano's eyes.
"So he threatened you."
Emma nodded.
"He threatened the baby."
The room fell silent.
Noah looked away.
Even he seemed affected.
Emma wiped tears from her face.
"He said if I stayed with you..."
Her voice cracked.
"...our child wouldn't live long enough to have a name."
Luca's hands clenched.
Violently.
The memory of Vincent suddenly felt unfinished.
Because Vincent Romano had supposedly died six years ago.
Supposedly.
Luca never saw the body.
Never trusted the reports.
And now...
Now he had a reason to question everything.
Emma looked directly at him.
"I left because it was the only way to keep her alive."
Luca wanted to argue.
Wanted to tell her they could have fought together.
Wanted to tell her she should have trusted him.
But looking at Lila...
He couldn't.
Because the child existed.
Healthy.
Alive.
Laughing.
Beautiful.
Emma's choice had worked.
The proof sat beside him.
And that truth hurt.
The next revelation arrived an hour later.
And it was somehow worse.
A police officer entered carrying a folder.
His expression was grim.
"Mr. Moretti."
Luca stood.
"What is it?"
The officer handed him several photographs.
Airport surveillance images.
The attacker from the plane.
Additional suspects.
Vehicles.
Faces.
Routes.
Luca studied them.
Then froze.
"No."
Emma immediately noticed.
"What?"
Luca held up one photograph.
A woman.
Dark hair.
Black coat.
Standing near the airport entrance.
Watching.
Emma's face lost all color.
Because she recognized her too.
"That's impossible."
The officer frowned.
"You know her?"
Neither answered immediately.
Because they both knew exactly who she was.
And she should have been dead.
Very dead.
Luca whispered her name.
"Bianca."
Noah looked confused.
Emma looked horrified.
The officer looked curious.
Only Luca understood the full nightmare.
Bianca Romano.
Vincent Romano's daughter.
The woman who inherited his empire.
The woman presumed dead after a warehouse explosion three years ago.
The woman who blamed Luca for her father's downfall.
The woman who swore revenge.
And apparently...
The woman now hunting a six-year-old girl.
Emma sat down heavily.
"No."
Luca already knew.
Yes.
Absolutely yes.
Everything suddenly made sense.
The attack.
The surveillance.
The years of hiding.
Bianca had never stopped searching.
Never stopped hunting.
Never stopped waiting.
And now she had found them.
That night Luca moved Emma and Lila into one of his most secure properties overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
A fortress disguised as a mansion.
Security teams monitored every entrance.
Every road.
Every camera feed.
No one entered without permission.
Yet Luca still couldn't sleep.
At 2:14 a.m. he found himself standing on the balcony overlooking the ocean.
Thinking.
Remembering.
Regretting.
The glass door slid open behind him.
Emma stepped outside.
Wrapped in a blanket.
Neither spoke immediately.
The waves below filled the silence.
Finally Emma whispered:
"She likes you."
Luca laughed softly.
"She's known me six hours."
"Still."
Emma smiled sadly.
"She likes you."
The truth lingered between them.
Complicated.
Painful.
Beautiful.
Luca stared toward the horizon.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
Emma closed her eyes.
Because that question haunted her every day.
Every birthday.
Every Christmas.
Every parent-teacher meeting.
Every moment Lila asked about her father.
"I wanted to."
Her voice broke.
"So many times."
Luca finally looked at her.
And saw the truth.
Not excuses.
Not manipulation.
Pain.
Years of it.
Enough to drown in.
Emma continued.
"But every time I tried, someone got closer."
The wind moved through her hair.
"The threats never stopped."
Luca believed her.
That was the problem.
He actually believed her.
Because none of this felt rehearsed.
None of it felt fake.
It felt like two people who lost eight years because monsters decided they could.
Then Emma said something unexpected.
"She has your eyes."
Luca smiled despite himself.
"I noticed."
Emma laughed softly.
The sound hit him like a memory.
Because he hadn't heard it in eight years.
And somehow it still felt like home.
For a moment neither spoke.
Then alarms suddenly exploded throughout the property.
Red lights flashed.
Security radios erupted.
The peaceful night vanished instantly.
Luca turned.
Already moving.
Security personnel flooded the hallways.
Weapons drawn.
Communications active.
One of his guards sprinted toward him.
"Boss!"
"What happened?"
The guard looked pale.
Very pale.
And Luca immediately knew the answer would be bad.
Very bad.
"Perimeter breach."
Emma froze.
"No."
The guard swallowed.
Then delivered the words nobody wanted to hear.
"We found a message."
Luca took the note.
Read it.
And felt his blood turn cold.
Because only seven words were written across the page.
You found your daughter. Now lose her.
The signature beneath it contained a single name.
Bianca.
And for the first time in years, Luca Moretti realized he wasn't fighting for power.
He wasn't fighting for territory.
He wasn't fighting for reputation.
May you like
He was fighting for his family.
And that made him far more dangerous than anyone imagined.
