Chapter 8 - The Siege of Brooklyn

The exile of Gennaro marked the beginning of the end for the old Marino empire, but the final collapse of the city's criminal underbelly was not without its dying gasps.
The Jersey mercenary outfit, realizing that Gennaro’s failure had exposed their entire network to federal authorities and Raphael’s vast intelligence grid, launched a desperate, uncoordinated assault on the Marino shipping terminals in Red Hook. They believed that by destroying the primary cargo hubs, they could break the family's financial backbone before Raphael recovered from his injuries.
They had severely underestimated two things: Raphael Marino’s strategic brilliance, and the fierce loyalty of a city that had grown tired of chaos.
It was a rainy Thursday night when the final confrontation occurred.
Raphael sat in the command center of his downtown headquarters, flanked by Frank and his top lieutenants. Wall-sized monitors displayed real-time satellite feeds and security camera footage of the Red Hook docks.
Maya sat in a chair beside him, holding Barnaby’s leash. She had refused to stay at the safehouse, insisting on remaining by Raphael’s side to monitor his surgical recovery.
"They've moved six armed units into Terminal 4," Frank reported, pointing at a thermal display showing heat signatures inside a massive cargo warehouse. "They think we're going to meet them with an armed ambush."
Raphael looked at the screen, his face calm, his dark eyes reflective.
"We aren't meeting them with guns, Frank," Raphael said smoothly.
Frank blinked. "Sir?"
Raphael reached out and pulled a thick leather folder toward him—the legal documents Maya and his team of attorneys had spent the last two weeks preparing.
"I signed the transfer papers two hours ago," Raphael said, looking at Maya with deep affection. "The entire Red Hook port facility has been donated to the City of New York and the United States Coast Guard as a permanent maritime protection station. The federal authorities were handed the deed at midnight."
Frank’s jaw dropped. "You... you gave away the terminals?"
"I legitimised them," Raphael corrected firmly. "The Coast Guard and NYPD Tactical Units are currently taking possession of Terminal 4 as their new regional headquarters. The mercenaries aren't walking into a mob war, Frank. They are walking directly into a federal trap."
On the monitors, dozens of high-powered searchlights suddenly illuminated the dark warehouse at Terminal 4. Federal tactical vehicles poured through the gates, completely surrounding the trapped mercenaries without a single shot needing to be fired by Marino's men.
Within fifteen minutes, every mercenary leader was in handcuffs, loaded into federal transport vans, effectively dismantling the last rival syndicate operating in the state of New York.
The room erupted into quiet, relieved murmurs among the lieutenants.
Raphael leaned back in his chair, taking a long, deep breath. The weight that had rested on his shoulders since he was nineteen years old—the violent, bloody legacy of his family's past—seemed to lift, dissolving into the cool night air.
He turned his chair to face Maya.
"It's over," Raphael whispered softly.

Maya walked over to him, taking his hands in hers. "It's finally over."
Barnaby trotted over, placing his heavy paws on Raphael’s lap, barking once—a loud, clear sound that filled the command center with warmth and life.
