Chapter 8 - THE FALL OF BRIGHTON BEACH

The storm that had battered the Adirondacks reached New York City by 4:00 AM, coating the industrial docks of Brighton Beach in a thick blanket of wet ice and freezing rain.

Inside the massive, cavernous interior of Warehouse 14—Volkov’s primary logistics hub on the water—Nikolai Volkov paced back and forth near a row of heavy shipping containers. He checked his phone every thirty seconds, growing increasingly furious as his strike team in Lake Placid failed to check in.

"Where are they?!" Volkov roared at Julian Vance, the private investigator standing nervously by a forklift. "They were supposed to confirm the capture two hours ago!"

"The storm up north is knocking out cell towers, Nikolai," Vance tried to reassure him, sweating profusely despite the freezing cold. "Give them time. The team is professional. They'll bring the kid."

Suddenly, the heavy steel roll-up door at the front of the warehouse didn't just open—it was completely obliterated as a ten-ton armored Cole security truck smashed through the corrugated metal at sixty miles an hour.

The truck skidded across the slick concrete floor, coming to a halt in the center of the warehouse, its massive high-beam floodlights blinding Volkov and his twenty assembled men.

Before the Russians could recover from the blinding glare, the side doors of the truck flew open, and three dozen heavily armed Cole operatives poured out, taking tactical positions behind concrete pillars and crate stacks, completely surrounding Volkov's crew.

Step by step, walking calmly down the rear ramp of the armored vehicle, came Damian Cole.

He wore his black cashmere coat, his hands casually resting in his pockets, his posture unhurried, as if he were taking an early morning stroll through a private garden.

Volkov backed away toward a stack of wooden crates, his face turning pale as he realized his entire strike team had failed.

"Cole..." Volkov stammered, reaching for his sidearm with a trembling hand. "How... how did you get down the mountain so fast?"

"I don't let weather dictate my appointments, Nikolai," Damian said, stopping ten feet from the old Russian boss.

The thirty Cole operatives raised their weapons in perfect unison, the crisp metallic sound of thirty slides locking back echoing through the vast warehouse like a thunderclap.

Volkov’s men looked around at the overwhelming force surrounding them, slowly dropping their rifles and handguns onto the concrete floor, raising their hands in total surrender. They knew when a war was lost.

Julian Vance dropped his clipboard and fell to his knees, weeping hysterically, begging for mercy.

Volkov stood alone in the center of the floor, his hand frozen on his holster, staring at Damian with wild, defeated hatred.

"You think you can just march into Brighton Beach and eliminate me?" Volkov spat, his voice raspy and broken. "The commission won't allow this! The other families will unite against you!"

"The commission has already been briefed, Nikolai," Damian said calmly, pulling a sleek leather folder from his coat and tossing it at Volkov's feet. "At 3:00 AM this morning, I sent every family boss in this city a copy of your illegal financial ledgers, proving that you have been skimming five percent off the commission's shared port revenues for the last three years."

Volkov froze, his eyes bulging as he looked at the folder on the ground.

"You didn't just cross me, Nikolai," Damian continued, his voice cold and precise. "You stole from everyone. Right now, there isn't a single boss in New York who would raise a finger to save your life."

Volkov slowly let his hand drop away from his weapon. The fight had been drained out of him completely. He looked like an old, broken old man standing in the ruins of a empire built on lies.

"What are you going to do with me?" Volkov whispered.

"I am giving you twenty-four hours to board a cargo ship heading to Vladivostok," Damian said flatly. "You will leave your assets, your property, and your operations behind. If your feet touch American soil after 5:00 PM tomorrow, Marco will hunt you down to the ends of the earth."

May you like

Damian turned his back on the broken old man, walking back toward his armored truck.

"Clean up the warehouse, Marco," Damian commanded. "And give the port workers a twenty percent raise starting Monday."
