Chapter 5 - Unraveling the Syndicate

The private conference room at the back of the Velvet Tide was heavily soundproofed, lined with acoustic panels and guarded by four armed men stationed outside.

Inside, the atmosphere was glacial.

Seated around the sleek glass table were the regional capos of Lucas Hale’s organization—men who controlled the docks, the warehouses, and the underground financial networks of Ashford Bay. At the head of the table sat Lucas, his expression completely unreadable, while Teddy Voss stood just behind his right shoulder, resting a thick folder of transcribed wiretaps and financial audits on the surface.

"I called you here because there’s a leak," Lucas said, his voice cutting through the heavy silence like a razor blade.

Marcus Vance—a senior capo and uncle to the disgraced Vince—slouched back in his leather chair, scoffing lightly. "A leak, Hale? Come on. Marcone’s men have been probing our perimeter for months. It’s just corporate espionage. No need to call an emergency council over a couple of street thugs getting tossed out of a waitress's apartment."

Lucas didn't blink. "Vince didn't find out where Quinn lived from Marcone. He found out from someone inside this room. Someone who knew about my personal interest in her and tried to use her as a pawn to destabilize my authority."

Marcus sat up straight, his face darkening with feigned outrage. "Are you accusing one of us of treason? Over a waitress?"

"Watch your tone, Marcus," Teddy warned quietly, resting his hand near his holster.

Lucas stood up, leaning forward over the table, placing both palms flat on the glass. The sheer, terrifying weight of his presence sucked the oxygen right out of the room.

"Frank Doyle was skimming payroll," Lucas said softly. "And when he was cornered, he traded information to your nephew about my private history with the Vance family line. You thought you could use Quinn to test whether I was losing my edge, Marcus. You thought sentimentality would make me weak."

Marcus’s face paled. He tried to maintain his composure, but his fingers twitched against the armrest. "You have no proof—"

"I have the bank records of your offshore account in the Caymans, funded by Marcone’s syndicate three days ago," Lucas said, sliding a single sheet of paper across the table toward him. "And I have your nephew singing like a canary in our holding facility downtown."

The room went deathly still.

Marcus stood up abruptly, his chair screeching against the floorboards, and reached inside his jacket for a concealed shoulder holster.

He didn't even clear leather.

Before Marcus’s fingers could wrap around the grip of his pistol, Lucas had drawn the Sig Sauer P226 with blinding speed, the muzzle locking dead center on Marcus’s forehead.

Not a single capo at the table moved an inch. They sat frozen, staring at the barrel of the gun and the cold, unyielding fury in Lucas’s eyes.

"You built your loyalty on fear, Marcus," Lucas said, his voice dropping to a terrifying whisper. "I built mine on absolute survival. If you ever mention Quinn’s name again—if you even look in the direction of her apartment—I won't just kill you. I’ll dismantle everything bearing your family name until there’s nothing left to bury."

Marcus slowly raised his empty hands, trembling violently as sweat beaded on his forehead. "Okay... okay, Hale. I’m out. I’m stepping down."

"You’re not stepping down," Lucas said, cocking the hammer with a sharp, echoing click. "Teddy, escort Mr. Vance to the docks. Put him on a freighter heading south. Make sure he never sets foot in Ashford Bay again."

May you like

As Teddy and two enforcers hauled the sobbing capo out of the room, Lucas lowered his weapon, sliding it back into his holster. He didn't look at the remaining capos, who sat in stunned, terrified silence.

"Meeting adjourned," Lucas said coldly, turning his back on them and walking toward his private office.
