Chapter 8 - The Ghost of St. Andrews

Three months later.

The autumn leaves in Lake Forest had turned deep amber and gold, swirling across the stone driveway of the Bolaro estate in the crisp October wind.

Inside the grand library, Roman sat behind his heavy mahogany desk, signing documents presented by his chief corporate counsel, Sarah Sterling.

"The acquisition of St. Andrews Medical Center is complete, Mr. Bolaro," Sarah reported, placing a gold-embossed folder on the desk. "We purchased seventy-eight percent of the hospital’s debt structure through our private holding firm. The board of directors has been entirely replaced."

Roman signed his name at the bottom of the final deed. "And the basement?"

"The old sub-basement isolation wing has been completely demolished," Sarah replied. "In its place, construction has begun on the Lucia Bolaro Neonatal Intensive Care Pavilion. It will offer free, state-of-the-art premature infant care for underprivileged families across the state."

Roman nodded slowly. "Good. Ensure Nurse Cross has complete administrative oversight of the nursing staff."

"It’s already in the charter, sir," Sarah smiled, closing her briefcase.

As Sarah left the library, the heavy double doors clicked open again.

Elena walked in, carrying four-month-old Nico in her arms. The baby was dressed in a soft navy blue onesie, his cheeks chubby, his bright eyes wide with curiosity as he looked around the sunlit room.

Elena was dressed in an elegant emerald silk blouse and tailored black trousers, her hair falling softly across her shoulders. The scrub nurse from St. Andrews was gone, replaced by a woman who moved through the vast mansion with quiet, unquestioned authority.

Roman immediately stood up from his desk, walking around the heavy mahogany table with a warm smile.

"How is the young prince?" Roman asked, taking Nico gently into his massive arms.

Nico instantly reached up with both hands, grabbing Roman’s silk tie and pulling it toward his mouth with a happy, gurgling babble.

"He tried solid food today," Elena smiled, sitting on the edge of the desk. "Sweet potatoes. Half of it ended up on my shirt, but he loved it."

Roman laughed—a deep, resonant sound that filled the room. He held his son against his chest, walking over to the large floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the gardens.

"He looks more like you every day, Roman," Elena said softly, watching the two of them.

"He has my chin," Roman agreed, looking down at his son. "But he has his mother’s heart... and your stubbornness."

He turned back to face her, his expression growing serious, filled with a deep, quiet emotion.

"The court documents for your formal legal appointment as Nico’s co-guardian were finalized this morning," Roman said, pulling a folded parchment document from his vest pocket. "If anything ever happens to me... he is yours. Completely. The estate, the trusts, the guardianship. Nobody can ever take him from you."

Elena walked over to him, placing her hand gently over his heart. "Nothing is going to happen to you, Roman. You built a wall around this family that nobody can break."

May you like

"Walls are built of stone, Elena," Roman said, reaching out and wrapping his free arm around her waist, pulling her close against his side. "You are the foundation."

Nico babble happily between them, his tiny hands clutching both Roman’s collar and Elena’s fingers, pulling them into a tight, unbroken circle of warmth and protection.
