Chapter 2 - The Ghost's Protocol

I called Dr. Franklin Yates to my private study within fifteen minutes.

The physician stood by the window, skimming through the handwritten chemical formulas and genomic sequences in Clara’s leather journal. His hands, usually as steady as a surgeon's scalpel, were visibly trembling.

"This... this is impossible," Yates murmured, adjusting his wire-rimmed glasses. "This level of cellular targeting wasn't publicly documented until last year. Genevieve was nearly a decade ahead of the entire oncology field."

"Can it save them?" I asked. I didn't care about awards or breakthroughs. I cared about two hearts beating behind glass down the hall.

Yates looked up, his face pale. "The theory is absolute perfection, Lawson. It uses engineered liposomes to deliver a corrective gene sequence directly to the bone marrow, neutralizing the mutated leukemic cells without destroying the host's healthy tissue. But..."

"Say it," I growled.

"It’s not a liquid in a vial, Lawson," Clara interjected quietly, leaning against the edge of my desk. "Genevieve didn't keep synthesized doses at home. It was too dangerous. The biological precursor—the living base culture needed to synthesize the treatment—is stored in a cryogenic vault."

"Where?" I asked.

Clara looked at me, her expression grim. "In the basement lab of Apex Bio-Tech, in downtown Chicago."

My blood ran cold.

Apex Bio-Tech wasn't just a research facility. It was a subsidiary holding owned by Crosby Vane—my most dangerous rival, the man who had spent the last decade trying to dismantle my empire, and the man whose armed scouts were currently watching my outer perimeter.

"Genevieve used Apex’s high-containment cryo-freezers under a false corporate shell because they had the only Level-4 biological containment facility in the Midwest," Clara explained. "She thought it was safe. But when Crosby bought out Apex three years ago, he locked down the vault."

Prescott entered the room, holding an encrypted tablet. "Lawson, we have movement on the perimeter. Crosby’s men just pulled up two black SUVs outside the east gate. They're demanding a meeting."

I looked at Clara, then at Yates, and finally down at the journal containing my late wife's hand-written notes.

The pieces were falling into place with terrifying clarity. Genevieve’s 'accident.' The sudden buyout of Apex. The false imprisonment of Clara Vance. Crosby Vane hadn't just been fighting me for territory; he had been sitting on the cure for my children's lives, waiting for the exact moment I was broken enough to surrender everything I owned.

"Prescott," I said, my voice dropping into the icy, calculated tone that had built my name. "Tell Crosby’s men I’ll meet him. Tonight at nine. At the Apex facility."

"Lawson, that's a suicide trap," Prescott warned. "Apex is a fortress. If you step inside his territory without an army, he'll kill you and take Mercer Enterprises before sunrise."

"He thinks I'm going there to negotiate for my children's lives," I replied, pulling a heavy silver-plated semi-automatic pistol from my desk drawer and racking the slide. "He doesn't know I'm going there to burn his world to the ground."
