Chapter 6 - The Basement Archive

The basement archive of the Mercer estate smelled of cedar, old paper, and cool stone.

Deep beneath the main house, behind a heavy reinforced steel door, sat rows of tall metal shelving units containing thirty years of domestic records, estate receipts, maintenance logs, and historical family documents.

Julian held a flashlight, its bright beam cutting through the dim gloom of the storage room, while Hannah carried Ellie behind him. Richard Vance followed close behind, holding his legal binder.

"Section four," Julian muttered, moving down the middle aisle. "Estate Vehicle Maintenance... 2015 to 2020."

He stopped in front of a row of thick, navy-blue vinyl ledger books. Each volume had a year gold-stamped on its spine in classic block lettering.

Julian reached out and pulled down the volume marked 2019.

He laid the heavy book on a wooden work table in the center of the room. The paper pages creaked as he opened the cover, revealing meticulous, hand-written entries in dark blue fountain pen ink—the precise, old-fashioned handwriting of Thomas Higgins, the former head mechanic.

Julian flipped rapidly through the pages, his thumb skimming past oil changes, battery replacements, and seasonal tire rotations for the estate's fleet of luxury sedans and SUVs.

He stopped at the entry dated November 13, 2019—the afternoon before Claire’s fatal trip to Manhattan.

Julian’s breath hitched in his throat.

14:30 PM – 2018 Range Rover (C. Mercer) Routine inspection completed. Tire pressure set to 32 PSI all around. 16:15 PM – Note: Mrs. R. Mercer entered garage after hours. Requested spare key to Range Rover. Stated she needed to retrieve a package from trunk. Denied access per Mr. J. Mercer standing security order. Mrs. R. Mercer became verbally aggressive. Replaced rear left valve stem assembly at 17:00 PM after noticing minor pressure bleed.

Underneath the entry was a tiny, handwritten note in red ink, added by Thomas the following morning:

November 14, 2019 – 06:00 AM Rear left tire valve stem found loosened by two turns prior to Mrs. C. Mercer departure. Re-tightened and pressure restored. Valve stem cap missing. Suspect intentional tampering. Reported to Mrs. R. Mercer at 06:15 AM. She instructed me not to bother Mr. Julian during his Manhattan meeting.

The basement room went utterly silent save for the hum of the dehumidifier in the corner.

Richard Vance stepped forward, peering through his reading glasses at the red ink entry. His jaw dropped.

"My God," Vance whispered. "It's a written contemporary record of intentional tampering, documented six hours before the crash."

Julian closed his eyes, leaning his heavy palms flat against the wooden work table. The anger that had burned inside him for two weeks didn't flare up; instead, a profound, chilling clarity washed over him.

"She loosened the valve stem so the tire would lose pressure slowly on the highway," Julian said, his voice dropping into an icy whisper. "She knew that on a wet mountain road at sixty miles per hour, a sudden loss of rear tire pressure would cause the vehicle to fishtail out of control."

"And when Thomas documented it in the logbook," Vance added, "Rebecca made sure Thomas was quietly retired with a massive severance package six months later, assuming no one would ever look through these paper ledgers again."

Julian turned around, looking at Hannah and Ellie.

"We have her," Julian said simply.

Hannah looked at the ledger, then at the powerful man standing before her. For five years, justice had been denied to Claire and Sophie Mercer because a greedy, ruthless woman had covered her tracks behind a wall of family influence and deleted server files. But a four-year-old girl’s innocent curiosity had pulled the first thread, unravelling the entire web of lies.

"What happens now, Mr. Mercer?" Hannah asked softly.

Julian stepped over to Ellie, reaching out to gently touch her small cheek.

"Now, Hannah," Julian said, his dark eyes glowing with a quiet, sacred peace, "we give Claire and Sophie the justice they have waited five years to receive."
