Chapter 7 - The Morning Sun

The sun rose over Chicago the following morning in a sky of brilliant, cloudless blue.
The front pages of every newspaper in the country carried the same massive, historic headline:
LARGEST FEDERAL BUST IN MIDWEST HISTORY: COUNCIL OF SEVEN INDICTED ON RICO CHARGES; VANGUARD DEVELOPMENT COLLAPSES.
In the north garden guest house of Blackwood Manor, sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling French doors, illuminating a breakfast table laden with fresh fruit, warm pastries, and hot coffee.
Hannah sat at the table, a cup of coffee held in her hands, her eyes fixed on the television screen mounted on the wall. The news anchor was showing live footage of Arthur Pendelton and Mr. Slate being led into the federal courthouse in heavy handcuffs, surrounded by fifty federal agents.
"Mommy, look!"
Lily’s voice broke Hannah’s trance.
Hannah turned to see her daughter running into the sunlit room, wearing a bright yellow sundress, her face flushed with laughter as she chased a tiny golden retriever puppy that was bounding across the hardwood floors.
Behind them stood Nathan Blackwood.
He had removed his dark suits, wearing a soft grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers. He held a small pink rabbit backpack in his right hand.
"Nathan!" Hannah stood up, setting her coffee cup down. "I saw the news... it's everywhere! Pendelton, Slate... they're all in custody!"
"They won't be coming out," Nathan said smoothly, walking into the room. He knelt beside Lily, handing her the pink backpack and placing the small stuffed rabbit back inside its front pocket. "I believe I owed you a promise, doctor."
Lily squeaked with joy, wrapping her tiny arms around Nathan’s neck and hugging him tight. "Thank you, Mr. Nathan!"
Nathan held the child gently, his hand patting her back with profound, fatherly tenderness, before standing up to face Hannah.
"Dr. Sterling completed the final verification on the Vanguard settlement forty minutes ago," Nathan told Hannah. "The court approved the immediate distribution of the ninety-million-dollar restitution fund. Forty-five million has been deposited into a trust account for you and Lily. Vanguard’s remaining assets have been liquidated to build a new pediatric respiratory wing at Children’s Memorial Hospital... named the David Collins Memorial Center."
Hannah covered her mouth with both hands, her shoulders trembling as tears of pure, unadulterated relief and gratitude spilled over her cheeks.
"Nathan..." she sobbed, unable to find the words. "David... David's name is clear. He's remembered as a good man..."
"He was a good man," Nathan said gently, stepping closer and taking her hand in his. "And his family will never suffer again."
Hannah looked into his grey eyes—the eyes that had once been cold as ice, but were now filled with a deep, calm, and protective warmth.
"What happens to you now, Nathan?" she asked softly. "What happens to Blackwood Manor?"
May you like
Nathan looked around the sunlit room, hearing the sound of Lily’s laughter as she played with the puppy on the lawn outside, feeling the warmth of Hannah’s fingers wrapped tightly in his.
"The manor used to be a fortress built to keep the world out, Hannah," Nathan said softly, a genuine, beautiful smile touching his lips. "I think it's time it became a home again."
