Chapter 5 - The Friday Variance

The boardroom of Ashford-Kline Development sat on the thirty-eighth floor of the Prudential Tower, a space of glass and brushed chrome that overlooked the entire gray expanse of Boston Harbor.

At 10:00 AM on Friday, the nine members of the executive board were already seated around the long quartz table. Desmond Kline stood at the head of the room, his jacket off, his sleeves rolled up in an expression of aggressive crisis management.

"We have to face the reality of the situation," Desmond was saying, his voice rich with an engineered grief. "Julian’s health has degenerated to the point where he can no longer exercise his fiduciary duties. The Hartford project is hemorrhaging capital because we don't have an executive signature for the municipal bonds. I have the medical statements from his primary neurologist here—"

The double glass doors at the back of the room slid open with a soft, pneumatic hiss.

The room went completely silent.

Julian Ashford rolled into the room. He wasn't in his hospital bed, and he wasn't wearing his cashmere loungewear. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his white shirt crisp, his silk tie knotted with mathematical precision. His hands rested firmly on the controls of a sleek, black motorized wheelchair that looked more like a piece of high-end automotive design than a medical device.

Behind him walked Marisol Reyes. She didn't wear her gray uniform. She wore a tailored navy dress that Julian had ordered from Bergdorf Goodman via a courier on Wednesday morning, her dark hair pinned up in an elegant chignon. In her hand, she carried a thick, leather-bound corporate folder.

And behind Marisol, holding her hand with a grip that threatened to stick peanut butter onto the glass walls, was Sofia. She wore her light-up sneakers and a small pink backpack shaped like a pig.

"Julian," Desmond said, his voice cracking slightly before he recovered his grin. "My God, we didn't expect you. This is… highly irregular. The board is in executive session."

"I am the board, Desmond," Julian said, his voice cutting through the room like a cold front. He steered his chair to the opposite end of the quartz table, Marisol taking her place immediately behind his right shoulder, her face calm and entirely unreadable. Sofia immediately sat down on the floor beneath the table, pulling out a fresh box of red crayons that Julian’s assistant had delivered the day before.

"You were discussing my fiduciary duties," Julian said, leaning his chin on his fist. "And my health. I appreciate your concern, gentlemen. The multiple sclerosis is an inconvenience, certainly. But last time I checked the corporate bylaws, my brain still functions at forty-four percent higher efficiency than the rest of this table combined."

A low murmur of nervous laughter moved through the board members.

"Julian, please," Desmond said, stepping forward, his eyes flashing with a sudden, vicious hatred as he looked at Marisol. "We were also discussing the security breach at the estate. I have the affidavits from Agnes Wren regarding the theft of corporate funds by your domestic staff. I don't think it's appropriate for a common thief to be standing in an executive session."

Julian didn't look at Desmond. He looked at the board members. "Mr. Kline is referring to Miss Reyes. He has spent the last forty-eight hours attempting to have her arrested for the disappearance of twelve hundred dollars from my private study safe."

He nodded slightly to Marisol. With a perfectly steady hand, Marisol opened the leather folder and distributed nine copies of a financial report down the table.

"If you turn to page six," Julian said, his voice dropping into that deadly, quiet clarity, "you will find the forensic audit of Vane & Associates, a shell corporation registered in the state of New Hampshire. Over the last six months, Mr. Kline has used that firm to siphon three pointeight million dollars from the Hartford development fund."

Desmond’s face went from pale to a mottled, dark purple. "This is absurd! This is a fabrication by a disgruntled employee who’s trying to cover her own tracks!"

"The invoices were signed using your digital key, Desmond," Julian said smoothly. "From the IP address of your summer house in Rye. On three specific weekends when you claimed to be in London negotiating with the European underwriters."

He leaned forward, his gray eyes locking onto his partner’s face with the force of a hydraulic press.

"Miss Reyes didn't take the twelve hundred dollars, Desmond. She’s the one who found the three million you dropped behind the couch."
