CHAPTER 2 — The Empire Beneath the Lie

I didn’t sleep that night.

Not because I didn’t have a place to stay.

But because I didn’t know who I was staying as.

Edward brought me to a private estate outside the city—larger than anything I had ever seen, but not cold like Ryan’s world.

Warm light filled every room.

Photographs lined the walls.

And in every single one—

A little girl who looked exactly like me.

Years I didn’t remember.

Moments I had never lived.

“You were abducted during a custody dispute,” Edward explained. “Your mother disappeared with you. New identities were created. Paper trails erased.”

I sat on the edge of a sofa, one hand still resting on my stomach.

“My mother wouldn’t do that…”

Edward’s expression tightened slightly.

“She did.”

He slid another file toward me.

Court documents.

Police reports.

Search records that went cold after two years.

Then silence.

Because someone powerful had made it disappear.

My voice dropped.

“Why would she do that?”

Edward hesitated.

Then answered carefully.

“Because of what you would inherit.”

That word landed heavier than everything else.

Inherit.

I looked up slowly.

“What exactly are you talking about?”

Edward stood and walked to the window.

Beyond it, lights stretched across the valley.

“My company is not just a company,” he said. “It’s one of the largest private logistics and defense infrastructure networks in the country.”

I blinked.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It doesn’t have to,” he said. “It exists whether people understand it or not.”

He turned back toward me.

“And you are my only heir.”

The room felt smaller suddenly.

Tighter.

He continued.

“Your mother took you because she knew she would lose access to everything.”

My throat tightened.

“So Ryan… my life… everything I went through…”

Edward’s voice softened.

“Yes.”

A pause.

Then:

“You were hidden from a world that was meant to be yours.”

That was the moment something inside me shifted.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Awareness.

Because suddenly, Ryan Montgomery wasn’t just my ex-husband.

He was a man who had destroyed a woman he didn’t even understand.

That night, I finally checked my phone.

Dozens of missed calls.

Messages from Ryan.

From Rebecca.

From unknown numbers.

Then one final message.

Ryan:

“You’ll regret walking away like this. You were nothing without us.”

I stared at it for a long time.

Then slowly placed the phone face down.

Edward watched me carefully.

“You don’t have to go back to them,” he said.

I looked up.

“I know.”

A pause.

May you like

Then I added:

“But I will.”
