Chapter 8 - The Hammer Falls

From the high rocky ridges surrounding the salvage yard, a deafening, metallic roar suddenly ripped through the desert quiet.

Three dark green US Military AH-1 Cobra attack helicopters rose over the ridge lines, their high-powered searchlights slamming down onto the salvage yard, blinding Vance and his operators in brilliant, white light.

"THIS IS THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS!" a booming loudspeaker echoed from the lead chopper. "DROP YOUR WEAPONS AND GET ON THE GROUND IMMEDIATELY! YOU ARE SURROUNDED BY ACTIVE-DUTY TACTICAL PERSONNEL!"

Dust clouds roared across the dirt yard as twenty armed Marines in full combat gear surged out from behind the rusting car stacks, their laser sights painting bright red dots across the chests of Victor Vance and his four Apex contractors.

"WHAT THE HELL?!" Vance shrieked, dropping his revolver into the dirt as two Marines slammed him face-first onto the hood of his SUV, slapping steel cuffs around his wrists.

The four Apex contractors instantly threw their assault rifles onto the ground, raising their hands above their heads as Marines tackled them to the desert floor.

Major Sarah Miller stepped down from the lead vehicle, holding an M4 carbine, walking calmly through the dust cloud toward me. She looked at my braced knee, then at the captured contractors, and let out a sharp laugh.

"You always did know how to throw a party, Carter," Major Miller said, clapping me on the shoulder.

"Thanks for the air support, Major," I smiled, leaning heavily on my crutches as the adrenaline began to fade.

"Federal marshals and FBI units are two minutes behind us," Major Miller reported, signaling her men to cut the ropes binding my mother and father. "The Ensenada police have already secured the transit trunk at the bank in Mexico under a federal military preservation order."

My mother collapsed off her chair onto the dirt, sobbing hysterically, crawling on her knees toward me. She reached out with shaking, filth-covered hands, trying to grab the hem of my pants.

"Emily... oh God, Emily..." Eleanor wept, her voice cracked with deep, pathetic shame. "You saved us... after everything we did to you... you saved us..."

I stepped back, pulling my leg out of her reach. My expression remained stone-cold.

"I didn't save you for your sake, Eleanor," I said down to her, my voice cutting through her sobs like a razor. "I did it because Grandpa Arthur's memory wasn't going to be dragged through the dirt by criminals like Vance."

My father stood up slowly, clutching his bruised ribs, looking at Noah and me with hollow, broken eyes. "Emily... Noah... please... we were wrong... we were so wrong about everything..."

"The federal marshals are here, Dad," Noah said, pointing toward the flashing red and blue lights speeding down the dirt trail toward the yard. "You'll have plenty of time to think about how wrong you were while you serve your sentence."

As the FBI agents swarmed the yard, taking Victor Vance, my parents, and the contractors into formal federal custody, Noah and I stood together on the edge of the desert clearing, watching the flashing lights illuminate the night sky.

The war was over. And the truth had finally won.
