Chapter 5 - The Siege Begins

The silence in the room was heavy.

For the first time since my wife died, I felt completely exposed. Clara—Elena—had seen past my armor, past my ruthless reputation, past the armed guards and the millions of dollars. She had seen a grieving father failing his children, and instead of running, she had chosen to stay and shield them.

Before I could answer, my phone vibrated furiously in my pocket.

It was Marcus.

“Boss, we have a breach!” Marcus shouted over the sound of screaming tires and faint gunfire echoing in the background. “Two black SUVs just rammed through the outer estate gates! Tactical team is engaging, but they’ve got heavy weaponry! It’s Valdez’s men!”

My instincts as a syndicate leader instantly took over.

“Lock down the estate!” I commanded into the phone, pulling my 9mm pistol from its holster beneath my arm. “Get the perimeter guards into position! I’m moving the girls to the safe room!”

I grabbed Clara by the arm. She was pale and shaking, but her eyes were fixed on mine.

“They’re here for me,” she whispered in horror. “Mateo found me.”

“Listen to me,” I said, holding her shoulders, forcing her to look into my eyes. “You are under my roof. Nobody touches you here. Do you understand me?”

She nodded frantically. “The girls—”

“We get them now.”

We ran out of the office and sprinted down the hallway toward the nursery. The muffled sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the front driveway below, followed by the shattering of glass in the main foyer.

Inside the nursery, Avery and Sophie were huddling under the wooden play table, their hands pressed over their ears, crying hysterically.

“Daddy! Clara!” Sophie screamed.

Clara didn't hesitate. She threw herself onto the floor, scooping both girls into her arms, pulling them tight against her chest. “I’m here! I’ve got you! You’re safe!”

“Clara, move them to the master closet!” I ordered, stepping out into the hallway and raising my weapon as footsteps pounded up the grand marble staircase. “The steel door behind the wardrobe! Code is 0822!”

A man in tactical gear wearing a black face mask rounded the corner of the hallway, raising an assault rifle.

I didn't hesitate. I fired three quick rounds. The intruder dropped instantly to the carpet.

“Go! Now!” I roared to Clara.

Clara picked up Sophie in her arms and grabbed Avery by the hand, sprinting down the corridor toward my master bedroom. Another gunman appeared from the service stairs behind them, aiming his weapon directly at Clara’s back.

“Elena!” the gunman yelled in Spanish. “Stop!”

Before he could pull the trigger, I stepped into the line of fire, driving my shoulder into his chest, slamming him against the mahogany wall. We crashed to the floor in a brutal struggle for the rifle. I broke his grip with a swift elbow to his jaw, seized his weapon, and neutralized him.

I stood up, breathing heavily, and scanned the hallway.

Clara had successfully gotten the girls into the master bedroom. I sprinted inside, slammed the heavy oak door, and locked the electronic deadbolts.

Inside the sprawling walk-in closet, Clara was kneeling in front of the hidden steel safe door, frantically punching the code into the digital keypad.

Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep.

The heavy steel door clicked open, revealing a reinforced panic room equipped with security monitors, emergency supplies, and hardwired communications.

“Get inside,” I commanded, pushing Avery and Sophie through the threshold.

Avery pulled on Clara’s apron, crying hysterically. “Clara! Come inside with us!”

Clara looked at the dark safe room, then looked back at me standing in the doorway holding a rifle, bleeding slightly from a scrape on my forehead.

“Mr. Whitaker,” she whispered, her voice trembling. “Please… come inside with us. The door is bomb-proof. You don't have to fight them alone.”

I looked at my daughters, terrified and crying inside the steel room, and then at Clara—the woman who had risked everything to protect them.

“My men are clearing the house,” I said calmly. “I need to make sure the threat is neutralized. Lock this door from the inside, Clara. Do not open it for anyone except me or Marcus.”

She looked into my eyes, a tear trailing down her cheek. “Promise me you’ll come back, Ethan.”

It was the first time she had called me by my first name.

May you like

“I always come home,” I promised softly.

She nodded, pulled the heavy steel door shut, and the lock sealed with a heavy, magnetic thud.
