Chapter 3 - The Broken Engagement

Daniel stood in the doorway of the diner, his expensive wool coat soaked through, his face pale and strained. He spotted April and Peter in the corner booth and walked over rapidly, pulling off his wet gloves.
"April," Daniel said, his voice ragged with exhaustion. "Thank God you're still here."
April set her coffee mug down, her posture instantly shifting into a cool, defensive stance. "Daniel? What are you doing here? Is Dad okay?"
"Your father is fine," Daniel said, sliding into the stool at the counter beside their booth. "He left the hotel thirty minutes ago. He told June that he had never been more ashamed of her in his entire life."
April winced slightly. She loved her father deeply, and she knew how much Frank hated cruelty.
"And June?" April asked.
Daniel let out a bitter, joyless laugh, rubbing his face with both hands. "June is currently in the bridal suite, screaming at the event planner, her mother-in-law, and the hotel manager. She’s demanding that Arthur Vance be barred from the wedding tomorrow for 'sabotaging' her rehearsal dinner."
Peter remained silent, his arms folded comfortably across his chest, observing Daniel with sharp, analytical eyes.
"She doesn't get it, April," Daniel said, his eyes hollow with a profound realization. "She genuinely doesn't get it. She thinks the tragedy of tonight was that a famous millionaire embarrassed her in front of her friends. She doesn't see that she treated a human being like garbage."
Daniel turned to Peter, bowing his head in sincere, deep shame.
"Mr. Vance-Cross... Mr. Hale... I want to apologize to you," Daniel said, his voice tight. "I sat at that table tonight and I said nothing while my fiancée humiliated you. I was a coward. I’ve been a coward for three years because I thought keeping June happy was my job."
Peter looked at the younger man. The hard edge in Peter’s eyes softened into an expression of quiet understanding.
"A man who stays silent while his partner crushes someone else," Peter said softly, "eventually learns what it feels like to be crushed himself. You don't owe me an apology, Daniel. You owe yourself a choice."
Daniel looked down at his golden engagement band on his left ring finger. He slowly pulled it off his finger and set it on the laminate counter.
"I called off the wedding twenty minutes ago," Daniel whispered.
April gasped softly. "Daniel..."
"It’s over," Daniel said, looking up at April with a mix of heartbreak and freedom. "I realized tonight that if I married June, I would spend the rest of my life watching her measure people by their coats, their cars, and their titles. I don't want that life, April. I want a home like your dad’s house in Oak Park. I want what your mother built."
Daniel stood up, taking a deep breath of the diner’s coffee-scented air.
"The wedding is canceled," Daniel said. "June’s mother-in-law pulled the funding for the reception ten minutes ago. The guests are leaving. I just came here to tell you... I’m sorry. And thank you, Peter. You saved me from making the biggest mistake of my life."
Daniel turned and walked out of the diner into the rain, leaving the gold ring sitting alone on the counter.
April stared at the ring, her heart heavy with the tragic weight of her sister’s destructive pride.
Peter reached across the table, taking April’s hand once more.

"What happens now, April?" Peter asked quietly.
April looked out the window into the dark, rain-swept streets of Chicago. "Now... the storm truly begins."
