Chapter 5 - The Bloodline Confirmed

The following morning, the storm had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, sunny sky over Lake Geneva.
Inside the private office of Dr. Aris Thorne—a chief forensic pathologist and independent DNA specialist in Chicago—Daniel sat in an armchair, holding a steaming mug of coffee he hadn't touched. Marcus Vance stood beside him, reviewing a stack of legal filings.
The door opened, and Dr. Thorne stepped inside, holding a sealed envelope.
"Mr. Whitmore," Dr. Thorne said, his expression solemn yet warm. "We ran the expedited short tandem repeat (STR) analysis on the cheek swabs from the two girls, comparing them against your DNA profile, as well as the reference sample pulled from late Mrs. Claire Whitmore’s preserved medical tissue samples."
Daniel’s breath hitched in his throat. He stood up slowly, his fingers clenching into fists. "What are the results, Doctor?"
Dr. Thorne opened the folder and handed the printed chart to Daniel.
"The probability of paternity is 99.9998%. Furthermore, the maternal genetic markers match Claire Whitmore with absolute certainty. Ivy and Skye are your biological twin daughters."
Although Daniel had known it in his heart since the moment the medallion fell out of the bread, seeing the cold, irrefutable scientific proof on paper sent a wave of overwhelming emotion crashing through him. He fell back into the chair, covering his face with his hands as deep, silent sob rocked his body.
Two years of living in a purgatory of grief, believing he was completely alone in the world, shattered by the loss of his wife—and all along, two tiny pieces of Claire had been alive, breathing, and waiting for him.
"Congratulations, Daniel," Marcus said gently, placing a hand on his shoulder. "You're a father."
"Where are they now?" Daniel asked, wiping his eyes eagerly as he stood up.
"They are at the Chicago Children's Hospital private suite," Marcus replied. "I had our team transfer them there under assumed names last night for a complete medical evaluation and nutritional recovery. Helen Ross is in the room right next to them."
Daniel’s eyes widened. "Helen? You found her?"
"Brody's team intercepted the vehicle transporting her to the private airfield late last night," Marcus explained. "She has a concussion and some bruising, but she is stable. And she has been asking for you."
Ten minutes later, Daniel arrived at the hospital's private wing. He rushed past the security guards stationed outside the room and pushed the door open.
In the hospital bed, propped up by pillows with a white bandage wrapped around her forehead, sat Helen Ross. On the bed beside her sat Ivy and Skye, their small faces lit up with joy as they munched on fresh strawberries and cream.
When Ivy saw Daniel walk through the door, her tiny eyes lit up. "Mr. Daniel!"
She scrambled off the bed, her small hospital gown trailing behind her, and ran as fast as her little legs could carry her, slamming into his knees. Skye was right behind her, giggling as she wrapped her arms around his leg.
Daniel dropped to his knees, lifting both girls into his arms and holding them tightly against his chest. He buried his face in their soft hair, weeping openly. "My sweet girls... my little angels."
"He knows, sweeties," Helen’s voice came softly from the bed. She had tears rolling down her wrinkled cheeks. "He knows everything now."
Ivy looked at Daniel, her big hazel eyes searching his face. "Are you going to stay with us now? Mommy Helen said you were our real daddy."
"Yes," Daniel choked out, kissing Ivy’s cheek, then Skye’s. "I am your daddy. And I am never, ever letting you go again."
Daniel carried the girls over to Helen’s bedside and sat down on the chair beside her. He took the elderly woman’s frail, calloused hand in his.
"Helen... I don't even know how to begin to thank you," Daniel said, his voice thick with gratitude. "You risked your life to save my daughters."
"I promised Claire," Helen whispered, her voice trembling. "When she gave birth in that small clinic in Ontario, she knew her body was giving out. The poison Margaret’s doctor gave her had damaged her organs beyond repair. She held those tiny girls in her arms, kissed them, and told me, 'Keep them safe from Margaret until they are strong enough to run to Daniel.' I kept them hidden in the woods, teaching them to be brave. But last week, I saw Margaret’s men scouting the road. I knew our time was up."
Helen smiled weakly, reaching out to stroke Skye’s hair. "I baked the silver medallion into that bread roll, gave it to Ivy, and told them to run through the forest path to the lake house porch. I knew if they reached you with that medallion, you would figure out the rest."
"You saved my life too, Helen," Daniel said earnestly. "I was dead inside until they showed up on that porch."
"So what happens now, Daniel?" Helen asked, her eyes showing a hint of worry. "What about Margaret and Ethan?"
May you like
Daniel’s expression hardened for a fraction of a second, the billionaire corporate titan returning, before softening as he looked down at his daughters.
"They are in federal custody," Daniel said clearly. "They will never touch this family again. Now, it's time to bring my daughters home."
