Chapter 5 - The Public Mask Slips

The counter-lawsuit was served on Monday morning.

Rachel didn't just mail it to their lawyer. She had a process server hand-deliver the legal summons directly to Claire at her high-end lifestyle consultancy firm in Soho, right in front of her high-net-worth clients and employees.

Simultaneously, Daniel was served at his investment banking firm in Financial District, during a senior leadership department meeting.

By 5:00 p.m. that same day, my phone began ringing incessantly.

First came Daniel. I didn't answer.

Then came Claire. I ignored it.

Finally, at 6:30 p.m., my doorbell rang.

I looked through the security camera monitor I had installed three days prior. Standing on my porch was Richard Harrington—Claire’s father. He was a silver-haired man in a six-thousand-dollar suit, holding a leather briefcase, looking furious.

Beside him stood Daniel and Claire.

I unlocked the front door but kept the heavy brass security chain engaged, opening the door only three inches.

"Margaret," Richard Harrington spoke, his voice deep, booming, and accustomed to commanding boardrooms. "Open this door. We need to settle this ridiculous family dispute right now."

I looked through the gap at the powerful man who thought he could intimidate a widow on her own porch.

"Mr. Harrington," I said calmly. "You are currently standing on private property belonging to a plaintiff who is actively suing your daughter and son-in-law for fraud and breach of contract. My attorney has instructed me not to speak to you."

"Margaret, don't be stupid!" Richard snapped, stepping closer to the door. "This counter-suit is ridiculous! You are suing your own son for a gift you gave him five years ago!"

"It wasn't a gift, Richard," I replied cleanly. "It was a loan, verified by bank records and Daniel's own written admission. And as for your daughter's lawsuit claiming she renovated my home—I have full security footage and contractor statements proving she damaged my property."

Claire pushed past her father, her face distorted with rage. "You are trying to ruin Daniel’s career! His HR department was served with a wage garnishment notice today! Do you know how embarrassing that is?!"

"Then he shouldn't have signed a fraudulent affidavit swearing I promised him my home, Claire," I shot back, looking past her directly at my son, who was cowering behind his father-in-law.

"Daniel," I said softly, my voice cutting through Claire's shouting like a razor. "Look at me."

Daniel slowly raised his eyes. He looked broken, exhausted, and deeply ashamed.

"Is this the man your father raised you to be?" I asked him. "Hiding behind your wife’s father while you try to take the house your father died paying for?"

Daniel swallowed hard. "Mom... please... Richard said we had to sue to force a settlement... I didn't want to—"

"Shut up, Daniel!" Claire yelled, spinning around to glare at him. "Don't apologize to her!"

"I am done listening to all of you," I said, looking Richard Harrington straight in the eye. "If you step foot on my property again, I will have the police arrest you for harassment. Have your lawyers talk to Rachel Kim."

I closed the door and slid the deadbolt into place.
