Chapter 5 - The Confrontation in Human Resources

The Human Resources department on the lower level was buzzing with tense, anxious energy.

Through the glass windows of the main conference room, I could see roughly forty housekeepers, laundry attendants, and janitorial staff sitting in folding chairs. Standing at the front of the room, wearing an expensive pastel pink designer dress that looked absurdly out of place, was Chloe Adams.

Chloe was thirty, blonde, polished, and possessed the kind of practiced, sweet innocence that had fooled Ethan for years. She was currently waving her hands dramatically, her voice carrying through the half-open door.

"...and I’m telling you all, as your HR Director, this new owner—Madison Bennett—does not care about you!" Chloe was exclaiming, her tone dripping with dramatic concern. "She’s a cold, wealthy socialite who fired Mr. Sterling because she wants to cut wages even further! If you don't stand together and strike tomorrow morning, she will replace every single one of you!"

A murmur of genuine fear and anger rippled through the assembled staff. Many of these women had worked at the Bennett Grand for twenty years. They relied on these jobs to support their families, and the sudden shift in ownership had left them feeling terrifyingly vulnerable.

I pushed the conference room door open. It swung wide, hitting the wall with a loud, sharp thud.

The murmuring died instantly. Forty pairs of eyes snapped toward the doorway.

Chloe froze, her arm still raised in the air. For a split second, panic flashed across her delicate features, but she quickly recovered, masking it with a look of high-minded authority.

"Madison," Chloe said, stepping around the podium, her voice taking on that sweet, patronizing tone I remembered from Patricia’s Sunday dinners. "This is a private employee meeting. Executive owners aren't permitted to intimidate staff during labor discussions."

I walked slowly down the center aisle of the conference room. I didn't look at Chloe. I looked at the faces of the staff—the tired eyes of middle-aged women, the calloused hands of maintenance workers, the genuine fear hanging in the air.

I stopped at the front of the room, turned around, and faced the employees.

"My name is Madison Bennett," I said, my voice clear, warm, and echoing into every corner of the room. "And I am the owner of the Bennett Grand Hotel."

Chloe stepped forward, her eyes flashing. "I am warning you, Madison, as the HR Director—"

"Chloe," I interrupted, turning my head slightly to look at her with absolute disgust. "You are not the HR Director. You were fired three minutes ago when I pulled the corporate registry for your brother’s staffing agency, 'Adams Logistics Services.'"

A collective gasp swept through the room.

Chloe went pale, her sweet expression vanishing instantly. "What... what are you talking about?"

"I’m talking about the twelve percent fee you were taking under the table for every underpaid contract worker you brought in to replace our permanent staff," I said, pulling up the digital audit files on my tablet and projecting them onto the large presentation screen behind the podium with a single tap.

The financial breakdown flared brightly on the wall: line items showing Chloe’s kickbacks, side-by-side with the suppressed wages of the hotel’s full-time staff.

The employees stared at the screen in shock. An elderly woman in the front row—a head housekeeper named Maria, whose name tag showed twenty-four years of service—stood up, her hands trembling with rage as she looked at Chloe.

"You told us the wage cuts came from the Bennett family!" Maria cried out in Spanish-accented English. "You told us they were stealing our pensions!"

"She lied to you," I said gently, stepping between Maria and Chloe. "For the last eighteen months, Sterling Management and Chloe Adams have been stealing from this hotel and using your hard work to line their own pockets while trying to destroy this property’s reputation."

I looked directly into Maria’s eyes, then swept my gaze across the entire room.

"Effective immediately," I announced, "every single permanent employee at the Bennett Grand is receiving an immediate fifteen percent wage increase to restore what was stolen from you. Pension contributions are being fully reinstated, retroactive to last fiscal year. And every full-time worker fired by Chloe Adams over the last six months is being contacted tonight with an offer of full reinstatement with back pay."

Silence hung in the room for one glorious, suspended second.

Then, Maria began to clap.

Within three seconds, the entire room erupted into thundering applause and cheers. Maintenance men slammed their hands on tables; housekeepers wiped tears from their eyes and threw their arms around each other.

Chloe stood paralyzed amid the cheering crowd, her cheeks burning with absolute humiliation.

Julian stepped into the room accompanied by two hotel security guards. "Ms. Adams," Julian said smoothly, gesturing toward the exit. "Your personal items have already been packed into a cardboard box and placed on the curb. Please leave the property before we add criminal trespassing to your pending fraud charges."

Chloe glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred as the guards escorted her down the aisle. As she passed me, she leaned in and whispered furiously, "Ethan never loved you, Madison. He laughed at you with us every single night."

I looked at her, my expression entirely unbothered, a calm, pitying smile touching my lips.

May you like

"And yet," I whispered back, "here I am, standing in my empire... while you are being walked out to the curb like garbage."

Chloe flinched as if I had struck her, then lowered her head and rushed out the door.
