Chapter 9 - The Final Audit

The jury deliberated for less than forty-five minutes.

When they returned to the courtroom, the foreman handed the verdict forms to the court clerk, who passed them up to Judge Montgomery.

The courtroom was so quiet you could hear the soft, rhythmic hum of the air conditioning. Daniel sat frozen, his eyes wide with terror. Vivian stared blankly at the floor, completely shorn of her former defiance.

"Will the defendants please stand," Judge Montgomery ordered.

Daniel and Vivian rose unsteadily, held upright by the bailiffs at their sides.

"On Count One: Attempted Premeditated First-Degree Murder with Extreme Cruelty," Judge Montgomery read, her voice clear and resonant. "We, the jury, find the defendant, Vivian Sterling, GUILTY."

Vivian let out a hollow, airless gasp, her knees giving out completely as the bailiff caught her under the arms.

"On Count Two: Conspiracy to Commit Capital Murder," Judge Montgomery continued. "We, the jury, find the defendant, Daniel Vance, GUILTY."

"On Counts Three through Seventeen: Wire Fraud, Corporate Embezzlement, Forgery, and Grand Larceny... We find both defendants GUILTY on all counts."

Daniel dropped his head onto the defense table, letting out a loud, agonized sob that shook his entire frame.

Judge Montgomery set the verdict forms down and looked over her glasses at the two defendants with stern, unforgiving eyes.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Montgomery said, "I have rarely witnessed a display of domestic cruelty so devoid of human empathy. You treated a brilliant, loving woman as an asset to be exploited, broken, and ultimately destroyed. The sentence of this court shall reflect the full severity of the law."

She turned to Vivian. "Vivian Sterling, for the charge of Premeditated First-Degree Attempted Murder, I sentence you to Life Imprisonment without the possibility of parole. You will spend the remainder of your natural life in the High Security State Penitentiary."

She then turned to Daniel. "Daniel Vance, for your central role in this monstrous conspiracy, your financial crimes, and your active facilitation of near-lethal violence against your spouse, I sentence you to Forty-Five Years in the State Penitentiary, with no eligibility for parole until you have served at least thirty-five years."

Bang!

The gavel struck the block with a final, definitive crack that echoed like thunder.

Bailiffs immediately stepped forward, latching heavy leg irons onto Daniel and Vivian, hauling them toward the rear holding door.

As Daniel was dragged past the prosecution table, he turned his head frantically, his face covered in tears and sweat, looking at me one last time.

"Evelyn!" he wept, his voice cracking with pure desperation. "Evelyn, please! Look at me! Forgive me! Please... don't leave me in there!"

I stood behind the prosecutor's table, my hand resting gently on Lena's shoulder. I looked at Daniel—not with hatred, not with rage, but with the cool, serene indifference one reserves for a closed chapter of history.

I did not speak. I simply turned my back on him as the heavy steel doors slammed shut, sealing him inside his dark, concrete reality forever.
