Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Accomplice

The rain began to fall in heavy, slanting sheets over Boston by mid-afternoon, drumming a frantic rhythm against the glass windows of the coastal estate in Rockport.

Inside the grand library, Elena Ward paced nervously back and forth across the Persian rug. Her phone was clutched tightly in her hand. She had just received an encrypted alert from her primary Swiss banking node: Account balance zeroed. Federal receivership asset freeze initiated.

"Damn it!" Elena hissed, throwing her phone against the mahogany wall where it shattered into a dozen plastic pieces.

She rushed over to the portable satellite uplink terminal on the table, desperate to wipe the hard drives and trigger the remote self-destruct script. Her fingers flew across the keyboard.

Access denied. Encryption override failed.

A heavy, resounding crash echoed from the front foyer downstairs.

"Federal agents! Open the door!" a deep, authoritative voice boomed through the empty mansion.

Panic seized Elena’s chest. She spun around toward the library door, reaching into her trench coat for her car keys, but before she could take a single step, the heavy oak door was kicked inward with splintering force.

Three heavily armed federal agents in tactical gear poured into the room, their weapons raised.

"Elena Ward! Put your hands behind your back! You are under arrest for extortion, corporate wire fraud, and conspiracy against a federal protected minor!"

Elena stood frozen, her hands trembling as the cold steel handcuffs snapped tightly around her wrists. As the agents hauled her backward toward the doorway, she caught her reflection in the dark, rain-streaked windowpane of the bay—a desperate, cornered woman whose ambition had finally consumed her entirely.
