Chapter 4 - Unmasking the Betrayal

With the custody battle effectively crushed before it could even reach a courtroom judge, I poured every ounce of my energy into building a secure, peaceful life for Leo and Oliver.

We moved out of the old suburban house and into a stunning, sun-drenched penthouse apartment overlooking the city skyline. It had floor-to-ceiling windows, high-tech security systems, and a dedicated nursery filled with white wooden furniture, plush toys, and vibrant artwork.

However, one major shadow still hung over my life.

Despite Julian's arrest, the federal prosecutors were hitting a wall regarding the master key to the offshore accounts. Millions of dollars remained hidden in phantom networks, and Julian’s defense attorneys were attempting to broker a plea deal that would allow him to walk free after serving less than three years in a minimum-security facility.

"He's hiding something big," Arthur told me over dinner at my penthouse one evening. "We found the primary ledgers, but someone was feeding Julian real-time updates on the federal investigation before the arrests. There’s a mole inside the financial enforcement team—or inside our own circle."

I held Leo against my shoulder, gently burping him while Oliver slept soundly in his rocker nearby.

"It wasn't just Julian working with Sienna," I mused, staring at the twinkling lights of the city outside. "Sienna was a mid-level marketing executive. She didn't have the technical expertise to set up encrypted offshore trusts."

"Who else had access to your personal computer system at the old house?" Arthur asked, adjusting his glasses.

A sudden, cold realization washed over me.

My mind raced back to four months into my pregnancy. I had felt overwhelmed, exhausted, and sick. A close friend had offered to help me organize my digital files and manage my home schedule—someone who had stood by my side during my wedding, someone who had held my hand when I almost had a miscarriage early in the second trimester.

My former college roommate and personal attorney: Rachel Cole.

"Arthur," I said, my voice trembling slightly. "Check the secondary access logs on my cloud drive from August twelfth. Look for an IP address registered to Cole & Associates."

Arthur pulled out his encrypted laptop and typed furiously for two minutes. As his screen refreshed, his face turned grim.

"Multiple downloads," Arthur confirmed softly. "All of your personal financial records and the whistleblower draft documents were accessed from Rachel’s office computer three weeks before you gave birth. She wasn't just helping you, Maya. She was selling your strategy directly to Julian and Sienna so they could prepare that $150,000 settlement offer in advance."

My chest tightened with a sharp, sting of betrayal. Julian’s cruelty was expected, but Rachel had been my sister in spirit for nearly a decade. She had sat at my kitchen table, eaten my food, and smiled at my baby bump while quietly calculating how much Julian would pay her for my secrets.

"They used my own legal strategy against me to construct that hospital trap," I realized, the anger inside me crystallizing into cold resolve. "They thought if they presented me with a pre-written agreement right after surgery while I was weak, I would break under the pressure."

"What do you want to do?" Arthur asked, closing his laptop. "I can have federal agents subpoena her firm by tomorrow morning."

"No," I said, looking down at Leo’s sweet, sleeping face. "Rachel knows how to manipulate federal procedures. If we approach her legally, she'll shred the remaining digital evidence. I want to catch her myself."

The next afternoon, I invited Rachel to my new penthouse under the pretense of wanting to hire her to handle my final divorce settlement.

She arrived wearing a stylish trench coat, holding a leather briefcase and a box of expensive baby clothes. She smiled warmly, stepping into the foyer and opening her arms for a hug.

"Maya! Oh my god, look at this place!" Rachel gushed, looking around the luxurious living room. "I was so worried about you after everything that happened with Julian! You are an absolute warrior!"

I let her hug me, feeling the cold distance between us like an ocean. "Thanks for coming, Rachel. It's been crazy."

"Of course! I'm your best friend," she said smoothly, sitting on the plush cream sofa and placing her briefcase on the coffee table. "Now, tell me everything. I heard about Arthur's non-profit foundation and the whistleblower payout. Are you safe? Is Julian still trying to contact you from jail?"

"Julian isn't contacting me," I said, pouring two cups of tea and setting one in front of her. "But his lawyers are offering a plea bargain. They say if I agree to drop my personal civil suit, Julian will reveal the location of the remaining $10 million hidden in the Zurich accounts."

Rachel’s eyes flickered—a tiny, split-second flash of intense greed that she quickly masked with a sympathetic nod. "Really? Ten million? Maya, that’s huge... but you shouldn't trust him. You should let me review those plea documents for you before you sign anything."

"I would," I said, taking a sip of tea. "Except there is no plea deal."

Rachel froze, her tea cup hovering an inch from her lips. "What?"

I reached into my pocket and pulled out a small electronic recorder, laying it quietly between us on the marble table.

"I called you here today to see if you would try to access the Zurich files from my home network while I was in the kitchen," I said calmly. "And my IT security team just flagged an unauthorized wireless connection initiated from your briefcase the moment you walked through my door."

Rachel went pale, setting her cup down so hard the porcelain cracked. "Maya, what are you talking about? I’m your friend!"

"You were my friend," I corrected, my voice cold as ice. "Until you took $200,000 from Julian to copy my whistleblower files. You were the one who told him to offer me $150,000 in the hospital because you calculated that my grandmother’s trust wouldn't mature until five days later. You thought I would be desperate for cash."

Rachel’s friendly demeanor evaporated completely. Her eyes turned sharp, cynical, and mean.

"You always had everything handed to you, Maya!" Rachel snapped, dropping the facade entirely. "Grandmother's trusts, brilliant accounting skills, a rich husband! I worked eighty hours a week at my firm just to pay off my student loans while you sat in your grand house playing dutiful wife! Julian paid me what I was worth!"

"You traded your career, your reputation, and your soul for a man who didn't even care about his own children," I said softly, feeling a wave of pity for her.

The front door opened, and two federal officers stepped into the foyer alongside Arthur Vance.

"Rachel Cole," the lead officer said, pulling out a set of cuffs. "You are under arrest for corporate espionage, unauthorized access to encrypted data, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud."

Rachel stared at me as the agents pulled her up from the sofa, her hands pinned behind her back. "Maya! Please! Don't do this! We can fix this!"

"I spent six months removing toxic people from my life, Rachel," I said, standing tall and looking her in the eye. "You were just the last piece of trash that needed to be thrown out."
