Chapter 9 - The Guest Room

One year after the lockout at Willow Crest.

It was a quiet Tuesday evening. A gentle spring rain tapped rhythmically against the tall, arched windows of Willow Crest.

Inside the grand sitting room, a warm fire crackled in the stone hearth, casting golden light across polished hardwood floors, full bookshelves, and vibrant fresh flowers.

Rosa, our long-time housekeeper, walked into the room carrying a silver tray with a pot of Earl Grey tea and two fine porcelain cups.

"Thank you, Rosa," I smiled, setting down my book.

"It is my pleasure, Miss Emily," Rosa said warmly, her face beaming with pure content. "The house feels so quiet, so peaceful now. Like a real home."

"It is a real home, Rosa," I said, taking a sip of the warm tea.

My phone rang on the side table. It was a video call from Jonathan Reed, who was currently attending an international real estate conference in London.

I answered, placing the phone on the stand. "Good evening, Jonathan."

"Good evening, Emily," Jonathan smiled from the screen, a cup of coffee in his hand. "I thought you might appreciate a brief update regarding our former friend, Mr. Mercer."

I leaned back against the plush velvet sofa. "Did his parole hearing come up?"

"It did," Jonathan reported. "The federal parole board denied his application for early release today. He will serve the full forty-eight months at Montgomery."

"And how is he doing?"

"According to his case officer, Daniel spent his first six months complaining that his cell was too small," Jonathan chuckled softly. "He repeatedly demanded to be moved to a private room with a window view."

I couldn't help but smile at the poetic absurdity of it. "And what did the warden tell him?"

Jonathan’s eyes sparked with dry, legal humor. "The warden told him that if he didn't like his room, he was welcome to check who owned the building."

I let out a soft, genuine laugh that echoed warmly through the high ceilings of Willow Crest.

"Thank you for the update, Jonathan," I said. "Enjoy London."

"Goodnight, Emily. Take care of our house."

"Always."

I hung up the phone and walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass doors overlooking the gardens.

Out in the rain, the iron gates of Willow Crest stood tall, secure, and imposing under the soft glow of the entrance lamps. Beyond those gates lay a world where I had once been a quiet, passive spectator, allowing others to dictate my worth, my space, and my future.

Now, inside these walls, I was the sole master of my estate, my enterprise, and my life.

I took a quiet breath of the fresh, rain-scented air, felt the warm gold signet ring on my finger, and smiled into the quiet night.
