Chapter 3 - The Arrest at the Country Club

If Ethan Vance believed his family's deep roots in Richmond high society would insulate him from the consequences of his actions, he severely underestimated the speed of my father’s influence and the uncompromising nature of Special Assistant Attorney General Marcus Vance.
The following afternoon was the annual Autumn Gala at the prestigious Farmington Country Club—a high-society event hosted by Ethan’s parents, Arthur and Eleanor Vance. It was the crown jewel of their social calendar, filled with wealthy investors, politicians, and media executives.
Ethan, Chloe, and Tyler had chosen to attend, acting as though the legal threats were nothing more than empty bluster from an angry ex-girlfriend. They were standing near the grand marble fountain in the main courtyard, champagne flutes in hand, surrounded by their inner circle.
My brother Liam and I sat in a tinted SUV parked across from the club’s entrance, watching the live updates from an undercover reporter our legal team had placed inside.
"Are you sure you want to be here to see this?" Liam asked, looking at me with concern.
"I need to see it, Liam," I said, my fingers folded serenely in my lap. "I need to watch the exact moment his illusion dies."
At precisely 3:30 PM, three unmarked state police sedans pulled up to the valet entrance of the country club.
Six uniformed officers, accompanied by two state detectives, strode purposefully through the glass doors into the packed courtyard. The soft piano music stopped instantly. Whispers rippled through the crowd as guests parted to make way for the law enforcement team.
Lead Detective Rodriguez walked directly up to the bar where Ethan, Chloe, and Tyler were standing.
"Ethan Vance?" Detective Rodriguez asked in a loud, resonant voice that echoed across the stone courtyard.
Ethan set his champagne glass down, offering a smug, practiced smile. "Officer, whatever this is, my father's legal counsel is already handling it. You can step outside."
"I don't think so, Mr. Vance," Rodriguez said calmly. He pulled a folded paper from his jacket. "I have an arrest warrant issued by the Circuit Court of Henrico County. You are under arrest for Felony Distribution of Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery, Computer Fraud, and Criminal Conspiracy."
Chloe gasped, dropping her glass. It shattered against the flagstone floor, sparkling rose wine splashing across her designer heels. "This is insane! You can't do this here!"
"Chloe Bennett?" Rodriguez looked at her, then motioned to two female officers behind him. "You are also under arrest as a co-conspirator in the distribution of illegal media."
"Get your hands off me!" Chloe screamed as an officer stepped forward, grabbing her wrists and pulling them behind her back. "Ethan, do something! Call your dad! ETHAN!"
Ethan’s mother, Eleanor Vance, rushed through the crowd, her expensive silk gown rustling wildly. "What is the meaning of this outrage?! Do you have any idea who my husband is?!"
"Ma'am, step back or you will be arrested for obstruction of justice," the detective warned sternly.
Ethan took a step backward, looking frantically around the room for his father, Arthur Vance. But Arthur was standing near the entrance, holding his phone to his ear, his face pale and completely frozen as he watched his son being surrounded. Arthur was a smart businessman; he knew when a ship was already taking on too much water to save.
"Hands behind your back, Mr. Vance," the officer commanded, forcing Ethan's arms behind him.
The heavy steel handcuffs clicked loudly into place—a sharp, metallic sound that cut through the silence of the country club.
Ethan’s head snapped toward the glass windows overlooking the driveway. Through the tinted glass of our SUV, our eyes met.

Even from fifty yards away, I saw the exact moment the realization hit him. He saw me sitting there—not crying, not hiding, not pleading for his affection—but watching him with absolute, icy calm.
The arrogant smile completely vanished from Ethan's face. The color drained from his skin, leaving him looking frail, pathetic, and utterly defeated as he was led out of the country club in chains in front of two hundred of his family's wealthiest peers.
