Chapter 7 - The Final Ledger

The snow began to fall over Manhattan just as the wedding reception at the Plaza Hotel reached its peak.

Through the towering arched windows of the Grand Ballroom, the white flakes drifted down against the glittering lights of Central Park like falling stars. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of white roses, vintage champagne, and the low, elegant murmur of five hundred of New York’s most elite guests.

I stood on the balcony overlooking the ballroom, resting my elbows against the carved stone railing, watching the crowd below.

Carmine walked up behind me, stepping out of the shadow of the velvet drapes. He held two crystal flutes of champagne, extending one toward me without a word. I took it, clinking my glass against his with a soft, musical chime.

“Harrison Sterling’c trial is scheduled for early spring,” Carmine noted quietly, sipping his champagne. “His federal indictments for securities fraud, money laundering, and subornation of perjury are ironclad. The U.S. Attorney’s office didn't even need our help to close the loop—though your forensic spreadsheets certainly accelerated the timeline.”

“Good,” I said, watching the snow accumulate on the ledge below. “A proper audit always leaves a paper trail so clean even a federal prosecutor can’t misunderstand it.”

Carmine chuckled, stepping closer until his chest brushed against my back, his arms wrapping securely around my waist, pulling me back against his warmth. He rested his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the glittering park below.

“You know,” Carmine murmured against my neck, “when I first saw you sitting at that piano in the Pierre Hotel—wearing that faded velvet dress, playing Chopin like you were trying to break the keys—I thought you were just another casualty of your brother’s mistakes.”

“And instead?” I asked, turning slightly in his arms to look up into his dark, mesmerizing eyes.

“Instead,” Carmine smiled, his thumb tracing the diamond ring on my finger, “you turned out to be the best acquisition I ever made.”

“An acquisition?” I raised an eyebrow, a playful challenge flashing in my eyes. “Mr. Valenti, if you think you acquired me, you clearly haven't read the fine print in our prenup.”

Carmine threw his head back and laughed, the sound rich and alive against the quiet whisper of the winter wind outside. He pulled me flush against him, his lips meeting mine in a deep, possessive, uncompromising kiss that tasted of champagne, winter air, and forever.

Down below, the orchestra struck up a slow, elegant waltz.

The guests on the ballroom floor cleared a space for us, watching with respectful, awestruck silence as the most feared mafia boss in New York and his brilliant, unbreakable wife glided out onto the marble floor.

I rested my head against Carmine’s shoulder, my hand resting securely over his heart. We moved in perfect, effortless sync, two souls who had balanced the ledger of our pasts and found that the final tally was love, power, and absolute victory.

The debt was paid. The kingdom was secured. And the dance was only just beginning.
