Chapter 4 - The Patriarch's Verdict

The silence that followed my father’s movement was absolute. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't point a finger. He simply turned his body around to face the middle tier where Hunter and Barbara stood, his stature radiating a lifetime of absolute corporate dominance.
"Chancellor," Arthur Pendelton said, his tone quiet but carrying a terrifying authority that filled every corner of the Diamond Room. "Who are these individuals, and why are they permitted to disrupt a formal academic assessment with personal domestic abuse?"
The Chancellor immediately stood up, his face slick with sweat. "Mr. Pendelton, I apologize deeply. This is... this is completely unprecedented. Security is already on their way."
Hunter blinked, his voice faltering as the name finally registered. "Mr. Pendelton? Wait... Arthur? You're... you're just her dad. You're the guy with the small real estate firm in Ohio."
My father let out a dry, humorless sound that wasn't quite a laugh. "The small real estate firm you are referring to, Hunter, is Pendelton Development International. We own the commercial park where your employer's regional office is located. In fact, we own the debt facility that underwrites the very bank that holds your mortgage."
Barbara’s jaw dropped. She looked from my father to the Chancellor, who was looking at Arthur with the deference usually reserved for royalty. "That's... that's impossible. Selena never said anything about this. She’s just... she’s just an ordinary girl."
"My daughter," Arthur said, his eyes narrowing into two slits of cold steel, "is a Vance-Pendelton. She refused a single dollar of my assistance for this degree because she wanted her intellect to stand on its own merit. And yet, last night, you entered the home that my family foundation subtly subsidized, and you physically assaulted her to protect your own fragile, pathetic mediocrity."
My father stepped away from the table, walking slowly up the carpeted aisle toward them. The two security guards followed closely behind him.
"You thought you were breaking a woman who had no one behind her," my father whispered, stopping just three feet away from Hunter. "You thought because she was patient with your smallness, she was helpless. You have forty-eight hours to vacate the apartment. The lease is held by a Pendelton subsidiary, and it has been terminated for breach of conduct. Furthermore, I have already spoken with the managing partners at your firm. They are quite eager to review the police report my daughter will be filing this afternoon regarding the physical destruction of her property and the domestic assault."

Hunter’s knees visually trembled. "Arthur... please. It was an argument. My mother... she just got carried away with the scissors—"
"Do not speak to me," my father commanded, turning his back on them with total finality. "Security, remove these vagrants from our university."
