Chapter 5 - The Crown and the Collapse

"May I have your attention, please!" Principal Miller stepped up to the podium, holding a sealed gold envelope.

The ballroom quieted down, the tension in the air thick enough to cut with a knife. Maya smoothed down her pink dress, taking a step forward on the stage, tilting her head toward the spotlight, waiting for her name to be called.

"Before we announce tonight's Prom King and Queen," Principal Miller said into the microphone, his expression turning unusually serious, "I have an important administrative announcement to make regarding the integrity of our student leadership."

Tessa frowned from the audience, her hands tightening around her bouquet of roses.

"Earlier today," Principal Miller continued, looking directly toward Maya, "the administration was presented with clear physical and digital evidence regarding a severe violation of our school's code of conduct—specifically, intentional property destruction and targeted harassment against a fellow student nominee."

A loud murmur swept through the three hundred guests. Maya's face drained of all color.

"As a result of this investigation," Miller stated firmly, "one of our court nominees has been officially disqualified from tonight's court, suspended from all extracurricular activities for the remainder of the school year, and will face formal disciplinary review on Monday morning."

"What?!" Tessa screamed from the crowd, stepping forward. "This is outrage! You can't do this to my daughter!"

"Security, please keep the aisle clear," Principal Miller said calmly, waving his hand toward two hotel security officers who stepped in front of Tessa.

Miller opened the gold envelope.

"And now, voted by the student body as your 2026 Prom Queen... Miss Nora Holloway!"

The ballroom erupted into deafening cheers. The entire school orchestra, the art department students, and dozens of classmates stood on their chairs, stomping their feet and clapping wildly.

Lucas Vance smiled warmly, stepping back to let Nora step into the spotlight.

Principal Miller placed the glittering crystal tiara onto Nora's head. As the crown settled onto her hair, Nora looked up toward the balcony—straight at me.

I stood at the railing, tears streaming down my face, clapping until my hands burned, mouthing the words: I love you.

Nora smiled—a radiant, unshakeable smile—and mouthed back: I love you too, Dad.

Down on the stage, Maya burst into hysterical, furious tears, turning to run off the platform. But in her blind rage and heavy heels, she tripped over her own ruffled skirt, falling awkwardly onto the wooden floor in front of the entire student body and three hundred camera phones.

Tessa tried to rush to her daughter, but security held her back as parents pulled out their phones, recording the utter collapse of the family that had built its entire identity on tearing others down.
