Chapter 5 - THE SIXTH MINUTE

In the warden’s office at Georgia State Prison, the printer began to screech.
6:52 p.m.
Eight minutes remained.
The digital photo of the blood-stained blue silk scarf, crisp and vivid, began to roll out of the machine inch by inch, followed immediately by the high-resolution scan of Daniel Carter’s final letter.
Aaron Bell grabbed the first printed page while it was still warm, thrusting it in front of his laptop webcam where Judge Rebecca Harrison was watching via an emergency encrypted video call.
"Judge Harrison!" Aaron roared, his voice bouncing off the concrete walls. "You are looking at direct, real-time physical evidence recovered from a hidden compartment inside the victim's house! Blood-stained physical evidence wrapped in the missing blue silk scarf, accompanied by a signed statement from the deceased naming Grant Carter as his extortionist and potential killer!"
On the video screen, Judge Rebecca Harrison pushed her reading glasses up her nose, leaning so close to her monitor that her face filled the screen.
Her eyes swept over the handwritten letter signed by Daniel Carter.
"My God..." Judge Harrison breathed, her composure shattering completely. "My God, it’s a setup..."
"Judge!" Aaron demanded. "Sign the stay! Sign it now!"
On the other side of the facility, two heavy steel doors slid open with a deafening hydraulic whine.
My mother was standing in the small preparation room adjacent to the execution chamber. She was strapped into a gurney, her leather restraints fastened securely across her chest, legs, and wrists. Two medical technicians were standing beside her, holding IV needles attached to clear plastic tubing that ran through a small portal in the wall.
Warden Price’s hand was on the black emergency telephone mounted on the wall inside the execution observation gallery.
The clock above her head read 6:55 p.m.
Five minutes.
The phone rang once.
Warden Price picked it up instantly. "Price."
"Warden Price," Judge Rebecca Harrison’s voice boomed over the speaker, clear, authoritative, and sharp as a gavel strike. "This is Federal District Judge Rebecca Harrison. Pursuant to my authority under Title 28 of the United States Code, I am issuing an immediate, unconditional federal stay of execution for Evelyn Carter."
Warden Price closed her eyes for one long, trembling second. A massive, silent breath escaped her lungs.
"Understood, Your Honor," Warden Price said. She turned to the execution team behind the glass wall. "Stop the protocol. Unstrap the inmate."
The room burst into sudden, frantic movement.
In the hallway outside the administrative wing, I collapsed against the wall, dropping to my knees and pulling Nora into my arms as tears poured down my face in hot, uncontrollable waves. Nora buried her face in my shoulder, her tiny body shaking as she sobbed into my jacket.
Aaron Bell dropped his pen, leaned his hands on the desk, and let out a sound that was half-laugh, half-sob.
Two minutes later, the side door of the administrative wing opened.
Two state troopers walked out, dragging Grant Carter between them in handcuffs. His expensive charcoal suit was rumpled, his silk tie crooked, and his face twisted into a mask of pure, murderous fury.
As he was dragged past us toward a waiting police cruiser, he looked down at me and Nora.
"You think you won, Lily?!" Grant snarled, spittle flying from his lips. "You think this changes anything?! You’re still broke! You’re still nothing!"
I stood up slowly, holding Nora’s hand tightly in mine. I looked Grant Carter straight in the eye—the man who had stolen seven years of my mother’s life, my father’s legacy, and my sister’s childhood.

"We have our mother back, Grant," I said, my voice steady, quiet, and completely devoid of fear. "You have a life sentence."
He opened his mouth to spit another insult, but the troopers shoved him headfirst into the back of the patrol car and slammed the door shut, cutting off his voice forever.
