Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Linda

A month into my court-mandated therapy and boundary management classes, my life was completely stripped down to its barest bones.

I was still on administrative leave, living off my modest savings. I spent my days attending therapy, completing homework assignments about codependency and narcissism, and working out at a local gym to burn off the suffocating anxiety. Every Tuesday afternoon was sacred: two hours with Lucas at the visitation center.

Then came the afternoon my past tried to claw its way back in.

I was exiting the therapy building when a silver sedan pulled up to the curb, screeching to a halt. The door flew open, and my mother tumbled out, looking wild-eyed and disheveled. Her hair, usually perfectly coiffed, was messy, and her clothes looked worn.

"Daniel!" she shrieked, running toward me across the sidewalk.

I immediately took three steps back, holding up my hands. "Mom, stay away from me. I have a court order."

"To hell with the court order!" Linda cried, her voice rising to a shrill panic. "Daniel, you have to help me! You have to talk to Evelyn!"

"I am not talking to Evelyn for you, Mom," I said coldly, keeping my distance. "Get back in your car."

"She’s destroying us!" Linda sobbed, grabbing at her scarf. "Your sister got fired from her job yesterday! The company she worked for was bought by a subsidiary of Vance Holdings, and they terminated her contract without severance! And my landlord just served me an eviction notice! The building was bought out, and they're raising the rent by three hundred percent! She’s ruining my life!"

I stood there, looking at the woman who had spent years systematically destroying my wife’s self-esteem, watching her break down now that the tables were turned.

"Evelyn isn't ruining your life, Mom," I said, my voice terrifyingly calm. "You ruined your own life. You used people, you stepped on anyone you thought was beneath you, and you taught me to do the same."

"I am your mother!" Linda screamed, her face contorting in rage. "I raised you! I gave you everything! And you're choosing that... that sneaky, ungrateful orphan over your own blood?!"

"Yes," I said without a single second of hesitation. "I am."

Linda froze, staring at me as if I had struck her across the face. "What did you say?"

"Evelyn gave me a home, a son, and five years of unconditional love while you treated her like dirt," I said, stepping closer, looking down into her eyes without a shred of the fear I used to feel. "You didn't raise me to be a man, Mom. You raised me to be your shield. Every time you were insecure, you used me to hurt Evelyn. But I'm done being your weapon."

"Daniel... please," she whimpered, realizing her anger wasn't working, instantly shifting into victim mode. "I have nowhere to go! Megan won't take me in! I don't have enough money for a new apartment!"

"Then you should have saved the money you spent buying expensive clothes to impress people at my dinner table," I said coldly. "Do not contact me again, Mom. If you follow me, I will call the police and have you arrested for violating the order."

May you like

I turned my back on her and walked toward my car. Behind me, Linda let out a horrifying, guttural shriek of rage and despair, pounding her fists against the hood of her vehicle.

For the first time in my thirty-two years of life, I didn't turn back. I got into my car, locked the doors, and drove away, leaving the echoes of her toxic reign behind me in the rearview mirror.
