Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

The aftermath was swift and merciless.

Vance Healthcare fell apart within forty-eight hours. News anchors broadcasted Grant’s mugshot on every station, exposing the horrific conditions at his clinics and the millions he had stolen from state programs. Arthur Vance was indicted as an accomplice, and their corporate assets were frozen by federal marshals.

Three days after the wedding that never happened, I sat in my apartment, sipping tea. My suspension had been lifted with full back pay, a formal apology from the department, and a promotion to Senior Forensic Auditor.

A knock came at my door.

I opened it to find my mother and father. They looked ten years older. My father’s posture was slouched, his shoulders weighed down by shame. My mother wasn't wearing makeup; her eyes were red and swollen.

"Clara," my father said, his voice barely a whisper. "May we come in?"

I stepped aside, letting them enter. They sat on my couch, looking at the floor, unable to meet my eyes.

"We were wrong," my father said heavily. "Grant... his lawyers were using our family name to sign asset transfers over the last month. If you hadn't stopped the wedding, your mother and I would have been financially ruined and implicated as co-signers."

"I told you the truth, Dad," I said quietly, sitting opposite them. "You refused to listen because you wanted the story he was selling."

"We were blind," my mother sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "We were so focused on making sure Vanessa had the perfect life... we treated you like an outsider. We blamed you for seeing what we were too foolish to face. Can you ever forgive us?"

"I don't hate you," I replied honestly. "But trust takes time to rebuild. You traded my integrity for a spectacle."

"And Vanessa?" I asked after a quiet pause.

"She won't leave her room," my mother whispered. "She’s furious... at Grant, at the world, at us. But mostly at herself. She realized today that everything she built her pride on was a lie."

"She needs to figure out who she is without an audience," I said softly.
