Chapter 3 - The Bail Hearing

The county courthouse smelled of old wax, stale coffee, and institutional fear.

Eighteen hours after their arrest, Ryan and Diane Vance stood in front of District Judge Margaret Sterling for their emergency bail hearing. They were dressed in bright orange county jumpsuits, their wrists chained to leather belly-belts.

Ryan looked pathetic. The arrogant, slick corporate lawyer was gone; his hair was messy, his eyes were bloodshot, and his expensive posture had collapsed into a pathetic slouch. Diane, however, still clung to her delusion of superiority, glaring at the gallery and muttering insults at the court guards.

I sat in the front row between Clara and Arthur Pendelton. I wore a tailored black suit, my hair pulled back neatly, my face calm and utterly immovable.

"Your Honor," Ryan’s defense attorney—a high-priced criminal lawyer named Marcus Vance, who was also his second cousin—began smoothly at the podium. "My clients are respected members of this community. Mr. Vance is a partner at a prestigious firm with zero criminal record. Mrs. Vance is a dedicated philanthropist. What happened yesterday was an unfortunate misunderstanding involving alternative behavioral discipline that was taken out of context by a hysterical spouse."

Judge Sterling, a sharp-eyed woman in her sixties with a reputation for mercilessness toward child abusers, slowly lowered her glasses.

"Alternative discipline, Mr. Vance?" Judge Sterling asked, her voice laced with venom. "A silver chain around a four-year-old child's neck? Forcing a child to pick scraps off a pet feeding tray while recording his tears for legal leverage?"

"It was staged by Mrs. Vance—the wife—to secure leverage in an upcoming separation!" Marcus lied smoothly, pointing a finger back at me. "Emily Vance orchestrated these photos to destroy my client's reputation!"

Arthur Pendelton stood up calmly from our table, adjusting his tie. "Your Honor, if I may."

"Go ahead, Mr. Pendelton," Judge Sterling allowed.

"We have submitted the preliminary forensic report from the Special Victims Unit," Arthur said, holding up a certified binder. "The video metadata confirms that the files were recorded over a period of 180 days on Mr. Ryan Vance’s personal encrypted mobile device. The audio clearly captures Mr. Vance instructing his mother, Diane Vance, to manipulate the child into crying for the camera. Furthermore, we have uncovered wire transfers totaling $150,000 from Diane Vance’s personal account to two third-party medical consultants hired to sign false psychological affidavits."

The courtroom went entirely silent.

Ryan dropped his head into his hands. Diane gasped, slapping her chained hands against her thighs. "That money was a gift! You have no right to look at my accounts!"

"Silence in my courtroom, Mrs. Vance!" Judge Sterling slammed her gavel with a sound like a gunshot. "I have seen enough."

The judge leaned forward, staring down at Ryan and Diane with pure contempt.

"The evidence presented suggests a horrific, systematic campaign of psychological and physical torture inflicted upon a four-year-old child for financial gain," Judge Sterling declared, her voice booming off the oak walls. "The court finds that both defendants pose a severe danger to the community, a flight risk, and an extreme threat to the physical and emotional safety of the child, Noah Vance."

She raised her gavel.

"Bail is DENIED for both defendants," Judge Sterling ordered. "You will remain in county custody pending grand jury indictment. A full, permanent protective order is hereby issued for Emily Vance and Noah Vance. If either defendant attempts contact, directly or through third parties, you will face immediate federal witness tampering charges."

BANG!

The gavel struck the block.

"Emily!" Ryan screamed as the guards grabbed his arms to lead him toward the holding cells. "Emily, please! Talk to me! We can work this out! Don't let them take my life away!"

Diane began shrieking hysterically as she was pulled away. "You gold-digger! You dirty little nobody! My family built this town! You'll pay for this, Emily! You'll pay!"

I stood up slowly, smoothed down my blazer, and turned my back on them completely as they were dragged behind the heavy steel doors.
