Chapter 10 - The Thirty-Eighth Answer

That evening, after the bakery had been cleaned and little Leo was sound asleep in his room upstairs in their renovated loft above the shop, Clara and Damian sat together on the back porch overlooking the quiet alley.
The rain had stopped, leaving the night air fresh and cool. High above the city, stars flickered through the soft clouds.
Damian sat on a wooden bench, holding a warm mug of tea. Clara sat between his knees, leaning back against his chest, wrapped in a soft wool blanket that enclosed them both.
Damian rested his arms around her, his fingers gently playing with the golden wedding band on her left hand.
"Do you ever think about that day?" Damian asked softly into the quiet night.
"Which day?" Clara asked, tilting her head back to look up at his defined jawline.
"The day I walked in here with fifty custom cake contracts and an engagement party I didn't want."
Clara smiled, remembering the terrifying, magnificent man in the black overcoat who had demanded she bake a lie.
"I thought you were the most arrogant, dangerous man I had ever met," Clara admitted honestly.
"I was," Damian murmured, kissing the top of her head. "I was cold, hollow, and surrounded by people who only cared about my money and my power. If you had accepted that contract, Clara... I would have married Vanessa. I would have lived a cold, empty life in that glass penthouse."
He tightened his arms around her, pulling her closer against his beating heart.
"You saved me, Clara. Thirty-seven times, you saved me from my own arrogance."
Clara turned slightly in his arms, reaching up to gently cup his face, her thumb tracing the soft silver at his temples.
"I didn't save you, Damian," Clara whispered, her voice rich with an unshakeable, eternal love. "I just waited for you to see what was real."
Damian looked into her dark auburn eyes—eyes that held no fear, no doubt, and no hesitation—and felt a wave of profound, endless gratitude wash over his soul.
"And now?" Damian asked gently. "What's the answer now, Mrs. Mercer?"
Clara smiled—a radiant, beautiful, unstoppable smile that lit up the dark Chicago night.

"The answer is yes, Damian," Clara whispered, leaning up to press her lips against his. "Forever yes."
And there, in the quiet alley behind a little bakery built on truth, beneath the vast and shining Chicago sky, the billionaire who had conquered an empire and the baker who had refused to yield held each other tight, knowing that their story had finally begun.
