Chapter 6 - The Sister’s Betrayal

While the forensic team worked at my parents' house, the hunt for my sister Vanessa was escalating into a multi-county dragnet.

She had fled her suburban home hours earlier, leaving her seven-year-old daughter Emma with a neighbor, taking fifty thousand dollars in cash from a hidden safe in her master closet.

At seven o'clock that evening, Marcus and I were sitting in the private consultation room at the police headquarters, drinking cold coffee, while Detective Vance reviewed security camera footage from various transit hubs across the state.

"She turned off her phone at noon," Vance said, tapping his finger against the desk. "Her vehicle—a grey Lexus SUV—was spotted on an automated license plate reader heading south toward the Indiana border forty-five minutes ago."

"She’s going to her husband’s family cabin in Lake County," I suddenly realized, sitting up straight.

Vance looked at me sharply. "Her husband’s family has property in Indiana?"

"Yes," I said, my memory working rapidly. "A hunting lodge near Cedar Lake. It’s registered under her husband’s business name, North Shore Development. My parents used to hide assets there during their tax audits five years ago."

Vance immediately reached for his desk phone. "Get me the Lake County Sheriff's Department in Indiana. Give them this address..."

Ninety minutes later, two Indiana State Trooper vehicles pulled into the dark, tree-lined driveway of the remote hunting cabin near Cedar Lake.

The cabin was pitch black, except for a faint blue light flickering from a side window—a laptop screen.

State Troopers approached the front door with weapons drawn, while a drone unit hovered silently overhead, monitoring the perimeter.

"Vanessa Vance!" a trooper shouted through a bullhorn. "This is the State Police! We have a felony warrant for your arrest for attempted capital murder and conspiracy! Step out with your hands up!"

Inside the cabin, Vanessa scrambled toward the back door, carrying a heavy leather shoulder bag stuffed with cash and her passport.

She shoved open the wooden door and ran out onto the rear deck, heading toward the dense woods behind the property.

"Halt!" a voice boomed from the shadows near the tree line.

A police K-9 unit—a ninety-pound German Shepherd—barked thunderously from twenty feet away, held on a taut leash by a handler in full tactical gear.

Vanessa froze, letting out a sharp, pathetic scream, dropping her bag onto the wooden planks.

"Hands behind your head! On your knees! Now!"

Vanessa sank to her knees on the cold, wet deck, sobbing frantically, her blonde hair sticking to her face, her expensive designer jacket covered in mud from her escape through the woods.

Within seconds, heavy boots echoed across the deck, and steel handcuffs snapped tightly around her wrists.

"You don't understand!" Vanessa screamed as she was pulled to her feet by two troopers. "My father forced me! He told me he would ruin my husband’s business if I didn't help him! It was my mother's idea to use the sedatives! I was just following orders!"

"Save it for the prosecutor, lady," the arresting trooper said, pulling her bag of cash off the deck. "You're facing attempted capital murder of a child, obstruction of justice, and fleeing across state lines. You aren't going anywhere for a very long time."

Back at the precinct in Chicago, Detective Lee received the call from the Indiana State Troopers. She hung up the desk phone and turned to face Marcus and me.

"We have her," Lee said simply. "Vanessa is in custody in Indiana. Extradition proceedings begin tomorrow morning."

I leaned back in my chair, feeling an overwhelming wave of exhaustion wash over me. The adrenaline that had kept me moving since seven o'clock that morning was finally burning out, leaving a deep, aching emptiness in its place.

Marcus put his arm around my shoulder, pulling me against his chest. "It's over, Maya. They're all in jail."

"Not yet," I whispered, looking up at the whiteboard where four names were written in red marker: Arthur Vance, Eleanor Vance, Vanessa Vance, and Blake Vance (Vanessa's husband).

"What about Vanessa's husband, Blake?" I asked Vance. "Did he know about the insurance policy?"

Vance pulled out a stack of banking documents that had just arrived from the state financial crimes unit.

"Blake Vance signed the wire transfer authorization for the insurance policy premium three days ago from his corporate account," Vance said, his eyes filled with dark satisfaction. "We picked him up at his office fifteen minutes ago. He’s currently in Room Three."

I stood up from my chair, my jaw set, my hands steady.

"I want to look at him," I said.
