Chapter 3 - Shadows from the Past

Emma felt as though the oxygen had been vacuumed from the room. I am in love with you. The words echoed off the glass walls, drowning out the ambient hum of the corporate office.

She looked at Daniel—at the raw vulnerability in his eyes, the subtle tremor in his mouth. He wasn't lying. A man like Daniel Thompson did not drop to his knees in front of his employees to spill his heart out of pity.

"Daniel..." she whispered, her anger evaporating, replaced by a terrifying, soaring hope that made her dizzy. "You... you can't love me. You barely know me. I am broken. My life is complicated, and I have nothing to offer you or Sophie."

"You offer us everything," Daniel said softly, finally letting his fingers brush against hers. "You gave Sophie her smile back. You gave me a reason to look forward to tomorrow. Don't tell me what I feel, Emma. Let me love you."

Before Emma could respond, the heavy glass doors of the executive suite burst open.

"Daniel! We have a massive security breach!"

A young man with panicked eyes, wearing an engineer's badge, rushed toward them. He stopped abruptly when he saw his billionaire CEO on one knee before a woman in a wheelchair, but urgency overruled his awkwardness.

"It’s the Meridian Network," the engineer stammered. "The firewalls are failing. Someone is executing a targeted, high-level cyber attack on our primary data centers. And... Daniel, they left a signed signature in the code."

Daniel stood up instantly, his demeanor shifting from tender lover to formidable executive in a split second. "What signature?"

" cleartext string: 'Regards from Julian Vance.'"

Emma gasped, her blood running cold at the sound of that name.

Daniel turned to her, confusion mixing with concern. "Julian Vance? Any relation to Victoria Vance?"

"He's her son," Emma said, her voice shaking. "Julian was... he was a software prodigy. And he was my ex-fiancé."

The silence in the corridor was deafening. Daniel’s eyes narrowed slightly as he absorbed the information.

"Your ex-fiancé?" Daniel asked quietly.

"We were engaged before my accident," Emma explained rapidly, her heart pounding for an entirely different reason now. "He was brilliant, but unstable. When the crash happened... when the doctors said I would never walk again, Julian left. He couldn't handle having a 'flawed' partner. He moved to Europe, got involved in underground tech, and vanished. I haven't heard his name in two years."

"Well, he’s back," the engineer said grimly. "And he’s currently dismantling our encrypted server banks. He’s taking down our core infrastructure."

"Get the cybersecurity team into the main war room," Daniel ordered, his voice cold as ice. He looked down at Emma. "Stay here. In my office. You're safe inside."

"Daniel, no!" Emma said, grabbing his wrist. "Julian is vindictive. If he's doing this, it isn't just about business. It's about me. Victoria must have told him about your grant! She must have told him that you reached out to me!"

Daniel took her hand and kissed the back of her knuckles gently. "Let him try. He’s attacking my company. He doesn't know who he's dealing with."

For the next three hours, Emma sat in Daniel’s plush office, staring at the snow storm raging outside the window. Distant commotions echoed from the hallway—shouted orders, frantic typing, phone calls to federal authorities.

Julian Vance was a ghost from her worst nightmares. When she was bedridden in the hospital, weeping over her lost mobility, Julian had visited her once. He had looked at her paralyzed legs with disgust, dropped her engagement ring on her bedside table, and said, 'You're half a person now, Emma. I can't waste my life carrying dead weight.'

That rejection had cut deeper than the physical trauma. It had convinced her that she was unlovable, broken beyond repair. And now, seeing her move on—seeing her associated with a man as successful and handsome as Daniel Thompson—Julian’s toxic ego had been ignited.

At 8:00 PM, the door to the office opened. Daniel walked in, looking battered but victorious. He dropped into the leather chair opposite her and rubbed his temples.

"We isolated the breach," Daniel said softly. "Counter-hacked his proxy servers and traced his location to a hotel downtown. The FBI is currently taking him into custody."

Emma let out a long breath she didn't realize she was holding. "Is it over?"

"The cyber attack is," Daniel said. He looked at her, his expression softening. "But he left a message embedded in the corrupt files. A message meant for you."

Emma swallowed hard. "What did it say?"

Daniel pulled out his tablet and turned it toward her. On the screen was a simple black text box with glowing green letters:

'You think a rich man can fix what’s broken, Emma? Ask him about the night of your accident. Ask Daniel where his driver was on November 14th.'

Emma’s heart stopped. November 14th was the night of her car crash.

She looked up at Daniel. His face was deathly pale.
