CHAPTER 3 — Five Black SUVs

The hospital parking lot changed first.
Not gradually.
Instantly.
Ethan noticed it from the glass window.
One SUV arrived.
Then another.
Then three more.
Black vehicles.
No markings.
No hesitation.
They surrounded the entrance like a silent decision had already been made.
Ethan stepped outside.
Cold air hit him.
And immediately, he realized something:
These weren’t hospital visitors.
These were containment vehicles.
A man in a tailored coat stepped out of the first SUV.
Older.
Controlled.
Eyes like steel under pressure.
He looked at Ethan first.
Not Evelyn.
Not the hospital.
Ethan.
“Where is she?” the man asked.
Ethan didn’t move.
“You don’t just walk into a hospital asking questions like that.”
The man studied him for a moment.
Then said:
“You brought her in.”
It wasn’t a question.
It was confirmation.
Ethan crossed his arms.
“I found her on County Road 14. That’s all I did.”
The man nodded slowly.
Then said something that made the air feel heavier.
“My daughter is not supposed to be found like that.”
Ethan froze.
Daughter.
The man stepped closer.
“I am Victor Sterling.”
A pause.
“And you are the man who saved my daughter’s life.”
Ethan felt something shift in his chest.
Sterling.
Again.
Victor looked past him into the hospital.
“She should not have been alone,” he said quietly.
Then his voice hardened slightly.
“And the people who allowed it will answer for it.”
Ethan frowned.
“I don’t care about your internal problems,” he said. “I just want to go home to my kid.”
Victor studied him.
Then asked:
“What did she say to you?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Nothing important.”
Victor’s eyes narrowed.
“That’s not what she says.”
Inside the hospital, Evelyn was being moved.
But not like a patient.
Like a protected asset.
Ethan stepped forward.
“Listen, I don’t know what kind of family you are, but I don’t want involvement in this.”
Victor looked at him for a long moment.
May you like
Then said something that changed everything:
“You already are.”
