CHAPTER 1The Price of Pretend

The Price of Pretend

Some people spend their entire lives pretending to be rich.

Others pretend to be poor for a single night—and discover who people really are.

The moment he glanced down at the leather-bound bill folder, the entire evening changed.

A faint crease appeared between his brows. His shoulders sank ever so slightly as he stared at the total. Then, almost beneath the soft jazz drifting through the luxurious restaurant, he whispered:

"I didn't realize it would be this much."

Across the candlelit table, her smile vanished.

Not gradually.

Instantly.

The woman sitting opposite him looked like she had stepped straight off the cover of a luxury magazine. Diamonds sparkled around her neck and wrists. Her silver designer gown shimmered beneath the golden lights. Every detail of her appearance screamed wealth, status, and exclusivity.

This wasn't just any restaurant.

This was one of the most prestigious Michelin-starred establishments in the city—a place where celebrities hid behind private curtains, billionaires negotiated fortunes over wine, and photographers lingered outside hoping to catch a glimpse of the elite.

Tonight, she had been convinced she was dining with a man who belonged in that world.

Then he spoke those eight words.

And everything shattered.

"You brought me here and you can't even pay the bill?!" she screamed.

Her voice sliced through the elegant atmosphere like broken glass.

The entire restaurant fell silent.

Forks froze halfway to mouths.

Conversations stopped.

Heads turned.

Several diners immediately reached for their phones, sensing drama unfolding before their eyes.

Within seconds, the sophisticated dining room had transformed into a stage.

And they were the evening's entertainment.

The man looked up calmly.

"I'm sorry..." he began, lifting his hands in a gentle attempt to ease the situation.

But she wasn't interested in explanations.

Her face twisted with disgust.

"Pathetic."

The word landed like a slap.

She didn't care who was watching.

She didn't care that dozens of wealthy guests were recording every second.

All she could think about was the humiliation of being associated with a man who apparently couldn't afford dinner.

Standing abruptly, she straightened her necklace and glared down at him.

Then she delivered her final blow.

"Enjoy your humiliation alone."

Without another word, she spun around and stormed toward the exit.

The sharp click of her heels echoed across the marble floor as she marched through the restaurant.

The revolving glass doors turned.

Cool night air greeted her.

She couldn't leave fast enough.

But before she could take another step, someone moved into her path.

The head doorman.

Impeccably dressed in a tailored tuxedo, he stood there with a strangely puzzled expression.

"Ma'am..."

She frowned.

"What?"

The doorman hesitated.

Then he lowered his voice.

"That man..."

His eyes drifted toward the dining room behind her.

"...owns this restaurant."

Everything stopped.

The sounds of traffic.

The breeze.

Even her breathing.

For a moment, she simply stared at him.

Surely she had misheard.

Surely this was some kind of mistake.

But the doorman's expression never changed.

The color drained from her face.

Her stomach dropped.

A cold wave of realization crashed through her body.

Slowly, almost mechanically, she turned back toward the glass doors.

Toward the restaurant.

Toward the man she had just publicly humiliated.

And then she saw him.

He wasn't studying the bill anymore.

He wasn't worried.

He wasn't embarrassed.

Instead, he was leaning comfortably back in his chair.

Completely relaxed.

Completely in control.

And as his eyes met hers through the glass, a slow, knowing smile spread across his face.

Not a smile of anger.

Not a smile of revenge.

A smile that suggested he had known exactly what would happen from the very beginning.

And suddenly, she realized the terrifying truth.

The bill had never been the test.

May you like

She had been.
