Chapter 5 - The Aftermath and the Empire

By Friday evening, the financial storm had broken and cleared.

The Wall Street Journal ran a front-page feature in its business section titled “The Return of the Architect: Claire Whitmore Reclaims the House Her Family Built.”

The Japanese delegation, rather than canceling their multi-million-dollar contract due to the executive shakeup, had actually requested a personal meeting with me after reading the audit transparency report. They admired strength, precision, and honesty—three qualities Grant had long since traded for flash and mirrors.

I sat alone in my father’s old office—the office Grant had tried to modernize into a sterile bachelor pad, which I had spent the last forty-eight hours restoring to its classic, warm walnut elegance.

The heavy oak doors opened.

Arthur Pendelton walked in, carrying a fresh cup of black coffee and a thick file of international aerospace patent filings.

“The European partners are locked in, Claire,” Arthur said, setting the folder down on the desk with a respectful nod. “And for what it’s worth... it feels like your father is sitting in this room again.”

“Thank you, Arthur,” I said softly, taking a sip of the coffee. “How is the transition going with the former executive staff?”

“Chloe Sterling cleaned out her desk yesterday afternoon before security could escort her off the premises,” Arthur smirked slightly. “She was crying in the parking lot because her corporate credit card was declined at the Starbucks across the street.”

I didn't feel joy at that news. I didn't feel anger either. Just a vast, expansive sense of peace.
