Chapter 6 - THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM

Spring sunshine began to melt the last traces of snow from the rooftops of the Moretti estate. Over the past three months, the thirty-two-room mansion that had once been steeped in fear and suspicion was now filled with laughter. Construction workers were finalizing the new grounds—a site set to become a sanctuary for rescued animals and a shelter for orphans.

Adrien Moretti had kept his word. He completely handed over control of the shipping empire to Nico, retiring entirely from the underworld. Day after day, he managed the charitable foundation alongside Elena, taught little Mia how to draw, and walked Bruno—who was now fully recovered—around the estate's lake.

However, the underworld never lets a legend walk away easily.

In a dark basement beneath the city of Newark, a ghost from the past sat in a wheelchair. Salvator. The forty-foot fall from three months ago hadn't killed him, but it had taken his legs and disfigured his face. Pure malice had twisted him into a monster.

"Nico took over the operations, but the real Moretti fortune—billions in secret cash and bonds—is still in Adrien's hands," Salvator rasped to the man standing beside him.

It was Leo, Adrien's ruthless cousin, who had lusted after the throne of the Moretti syndicate for years.

"Nico is too careful," Leo said coldly, spinning a gold ring on his finger. "But Adrien has grown soft. He lives like a civilian, spending his days with a maid and her child. He has forgotten how to pull a trigger."

"I want to see him on his knees," Salvator hissed through gritted teeth. "I want to strip away everything he holds dear. Just like he ruined my life."

Back at the estate, the evening was tranquil. Mia sat on the living room rug, holding colored crayons as she worked on a large drawing. It depicted a big yellow house, a giant black dog named Bruno, and Adrien, Elena, and Mia all holding hands.

"Look, Mr. Adrien!" Mia squeaked, holding the drawing up to him.

Adrien leaned down, taking the paper from her tiny hands. A strange, comforting warmth bloomed inside a heart that had been cold and guarded for decades. He glanced over at Elena, who was preparing tea in the kitchen. Their eyes met, sharing a quiet, profound understanding and a love that had grown naturally with each passing day.

"It's beautiful, Mia," Adrien said softly, patting her head. "We're going to frame this and hang it right in the main living room."

Just then, Adrien's phone vibrated. It was Nico.

"Adrien," Nico's voice sounded tense over the encrypted line. "Leo vanished from Manhattan this afternoon. And fifty million dollars from his shadow fund was liquidated. Something is wrong. Increase the estate's security immediately."

Adrien stood up, his demeanor shifting instantly as the ancient, sharp instincts of a shadow boss resurfaced. "Understood. Put the gate guards on maximum alert."

Unbeknownst to Adrien, the threat was not approaching from the front gate. It had already slithered inside.
