Chapter 8 - The Return of Clara Coleman

The air in the drawing room was thick enough to choke on.
Clara sat in the velvet armchair, sipping tea that Gerald had prepared with stiff, rigid movements. Nathan stood by the fireplace, his knuckles white, staring at his wife as if she were a ghost that refused to vanish with the dawn.
"The car accident in Switzerland was staged," Clara said matter-of-factly, adjusting her silk scarf. "Victor helped me arrange it. The Italian syndicate was closing in on my family's old debts, Nathan. If I had stayed, they would have targeted me—and the boys."
"So you abandoned them?" Nathan’s voice was low, vibrating with a rage far deeper than anything he had shown toward Ashford. "You let six-year-old boys mourn their mother? You let your brother poison them for eight months while you hid in Europe?"
Clara’s eyes flicked to me, taking in my simple woolen cardigan and sensible shoes before turning back to her husband. "Victor went too far with Ashford. That wasn't part of the plan. He was supposed to use the boys' health to pressure you into transferring the company stock to my shell corporation. Once the stock was in my name, I was going to return, 'miraculously' recovered from my amnesia, and take control of the estate."
"You used your own children as leverage?" I spoke up, stepping forward into the light. I couldn't remain silent any longer. "They were dying, Clara. Their organs were failing. They screamed in their sleep every night for months!"
Clara narrowed her eyes, evaluating me with icy disdain. "You are the help. Speak when you are spoken to."
"She stays," Nathan roared, his voice shaking the room. "She saved our sons while you were sitting in Zurich calculating your net worth! You don't get to address her, Clara. You don't even get to breathe the same air as her!"
Clara laughed softly—a bitter, hollow sound. "Nathan, don't be naive. The boys are mine. The legal trust was written under my family's name. I have the power of attorney documents signed before I left. I came here to take my children, Nathan. And if you try to stop me, every document revealing your enterprise's offshore operations will be delivered to the Department of Justice by tomorrow morning."
Silence descended upon the room.
Nathan stared at her, the reality of the legal trap closing around him. His empire, his wealth, his freedom—everything he had spent a lifetime building was being used by the woman he had once loved to tear his children away from him.
"You won't take them," Nathan whispered.
"I already have," Clara replied, rising gracefully from her chair. "My legal team files the custody petition at eight o'clock tomorrow morning in New York. Enjoy your last night with them, Nathan."

She turned toward the door, her heels clicking smartly against the hardwood floor.
"Wait," I said, stepping directly into her path.
