Chapter 10 - The View from the Porch

Two years later.

On a warm, beautiful Sunday afternoon in Lake Magdalene, just north of Tampa, the sun sparkled over the quiet, clear waters of the lake.

Sitting on the broad wooden porch of a beautiful stone lake house was Everett Cole, resting in a comfortable rocking chair, holding a mug of warm tea.

Playing on the green lawn near the water's edge was eight-year-old Lily, running around with a playful golden retriever puppy, her laughter floating over the gentle breeze.

Sitting in the rocking chair beside Everett was Claire. She was wearing comfortable jeans and a soft cream sweater, looking relaxed, peaceful, and entirely at home.

As Vice President of Operations, Claire had transformed the corporate culture of Cole Hospitality Group nationwide. On-site childcare centers had been rolled out to over forty locations, emergency employee relief funds had aided hundreds of struggling workers, and the company had been named the #1 Best Place to Work in Hospitality in America.

"She's growing up so fast," Everett said softly, looking at Lily as she threw a tennis ball across the grass.

"She asks about her 'Grandpa Everett' every day after school," Claire smiled, turning her head to look at the old man who had become the center of their lives.

Everett let out a quiet, contented chuckle. "I never had children of my own, Claire. Mary and I... we tried, but it was never meant to be. I spent forty years building a fortune thinking money was the legacy I was leaving behind."

He turned his head, looking into Claire’s eyes with deep, paternal love.

"I was wrong," Everett whispered. "You and Lily... you are my legacy."

Claire reached out, covering Everett’s weathered, warm hand with her own.

Three years ago, she had walked out into a raging storm on Nebraska Avenue with twenty-three dollars in her checking account, a feverish child in her arms, and a heart broken by grief and humiliation.

She had thought her life was over.

She had thought nobody was watching.

But a quiet man sitting in Booth Seven had seen her strength. He had opened a door in the middle of the rain, built a ladder out of kindness, and given her the power to change the world for thousands of mothers just like her.

"Mommy! Grandpa Everett! Look!" Lily shouted from the lawn, holding up a bright, shiny sea glass she had found by the lake shore. "It looks like a star!"

Claire and Everett both smiled, rocking together under the warm Florida sun, knowing that the storm was finally over, and the sky would be bright forever.
