Chapter 10 - The Birthday Feast

One month later. December 24th.

The sun was setting over Lake Michigan, painting the winter sky in magnificent hues of violet, rose, and gold.

The Marchetti brownstone had been completely restored. The shattered glass was gone, replaced by thick reinforced windows; the walls were freshly painted in warm cream tones; and the great kitchen was filled with light, laughter, and the heavenly scent of roasting rosemary chicken and freshly baked pastry.

Tonight was Alaric’s thirty-five birthday—and Christmas Eve.

There were no bodyguards in the kitchen. Franco sat at the breakfast nook in a clean wool sweater, sipping a glass of fine Italian red wine, arguing playfully with Anna about the correct way to roll cannoli shells.

At the main marble island, illuminated by warm brass pendant lights, stood Sophia.

She wore a beautiful velvet green dress with a white lace collar. Her small hands, confident and steady, were holding a long silver pie server, carefully lifting a golden slice of warm apple pie onto a porcelain plate.

"Careful, Sophia," I whispered, standing behind her, my hands lightly resting on her hips to guide her balance. "Keep it level."

"I have it, Mia," she smiled, placing the slice perfectly in the center of the plate.

She picked up the plate, turned around, and walked slowly toward the head of the dining table where Alaric sat.

Alaric wore a crisp black suit, his left arm out of its sling for the first time in four weeks. His face was full, healthy, his gray eyes bright with a calm, profound peace that had replaced the cold shadows of his past life.

Sophia set the plate down in front of him, her fingers tracing the rim of the porcelain to make sure it was centered.

"Happy thirty-fifth birthday, Papa," Sophia said, her voice ringing clear and joyful through the grand room. "I made it for you. All by myself."

Alaric looked down at the pie—the golden lattice crust, the glistening spiced apples, the faint dusting of turbinado sugar on top.

He picked up a silver fork, cut off a piece containing both crust and apple, and lifted it to his mouth.

The room went completely quiet. Even Franco stopped arguing with Anna, watching his Don.

Alaric chewed slowly. He closed his eyes for three long heartbeats.

When he opened them, his eyes were wet with unshed tears.

"It is... the most wonderful thing I have ever tasted in my life, Sophia," Alaric said, his voice thick with emotion. "Thank you, my beautiful girl."

Sophia let out a triumphant squeal, throwing her arms around his neck. Alaric held her tight, kissing her cheek, then looked up over her shoulder at me.

I was standing near the kitchen entrance, wearing a simple blue wool dress, holding a tray of clean dessert forks. I smiled at them—a quiet, contented smile of a woman who had finally found where she belonged.

Alaric stood up, holding Sophia in his right arm, and walked toward me.

He stopped two inches away.

"Mia," he said softly, his deep voice carrying a resonance that vibrated straight to my core.

"Yes, Alaric?"

He set Sophia down gently on her feet. Then, in front of Franco, in front of Anna, in front of his daughter, Alaric Marchetti reached out, cupped my face in his hand, and drew me into a soft, slow, and breathtaking kiss.

His lips were warm, tasting of dark cinnamon and sweet apples. A wave of indescribable warmth washed over me, and I closed my eyes, melting into his touch, my hands coming up to rest against the lapels of his suit jacket.

When he finally pulled back, his gray eyes were burning with a fierce, unwavering devotion.

"No more hourly wage," Alaric whispered, his thumb gently caressing my cheekbone. "No more shifts at Rosetti's. No more debt. I want you here, Mia. Not as a teacher. Not as a employee. As my partner. As Sophia’s mother. As the heart of this house."

Sophia grabbed both of our hands, pulling them together between her small palms.

"Say yes, Mia!" Sophia giggled, bouncing on her heels. "Please say yes! We already saved a spot for your clothes in Papa's big closet!"

I let out a tearful, joyous laugh, looking from Sophia’s beaming, beautiful face to Alaric’s hopeful, waiting eyes.

May you like

"Yes," I whispered, leaning up to kiss him again. "Yes, Alaric. A thousand times yes."

Outside, snow began to fall softly over Chicago, dusting the iron gates and high brick walls in a blanket of pure, quiet white. But inside the brownstone, surrounded by the scent of warm pie, glowing firelight, and the sound of a little girl's laughter, there was only warmth, peace, and a love that had finally found its home.
