Chapter 1 - The Sanctuary of the King

The neon lights of the ambulance cast a rhythmic red and blue glow across the glass facade of the Ashworth Grand Hotel. Inside the vehicle, Della Marsh pressed her trembling hand against her abdomen. The sharp, tight contractions that had gripped her body in the lobby were beginning to recede into a dull ache, but her heart refused to slow down.

"Blood pressure is elevated, but the fetal heartbeat is stable," the paramedic murmured, checking the monitor. "You're lucky, ma'am. The physical trauma was minimal, mostly shock."

Della closed her eyes, letting out a breath she felt she had been holding for years. Stable. Her baby was safe.

When the ambulance arrived at the private wing of St. Jude’s Hospital—an exclusive medical facility usually reserved for dignitaries and billionaires—Della was surprised to find a team of doctors already waiting at the bay. She was rushed into a luxurious private suite, complete with plush armchairs, a pristine view of the city skyline, and a security guard stationed outside the door.

An hour later, the door clicked open.

Royce Calloway stepped into the room. He had discarded his suit jacket, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his forearms, exposing the dark, intricate tattoos that crept down his wrists. His presence immediately sucked the air out of the room. He didn't look like a hotelier; he looked like a king who had just walked off a battlefield.

"Mr. Calloway," Della stammered, trying to sit up. "I... I don't think I belong in this wing. I don't have insurance that covers—"

"Lie down, Della," Royce interrupted, his voice dropping to a low, commanding rumble that nevertheless held an unfamiliar gentleness. He walked to the side of her bed, his eyes instantly tracking to her bandaged hand. "Everything in this hospital, and in this city, is taken care of. You don't owe a single cent."

Della looked at him, her brow furrowing. "Why are you doing this? I'm just a part-time waitress. I ruined a vintage mirror in your lobby."

Royce looked at her for a long, silent moment. His hand twitched at his side, wanting to reach out and touch the old crescent scar beneath her bandage, but he restrained himself. "You didn't ruin anything. The mirror can be replaced. You and your child cannot." He paused, his gaze intensifying. "Do you truly not remember me, Della?"

Della blinked, staring at his sharp jawline, his piercing gray eyes. Memories of her harsh, impoverished past blurred together, but suddenly, a rainy midnight from four years ago flashed in her mind. A bleeding man in a soaked jacket. The sound of gunshots echoing in the alley behind her apartment.

"The alley..." she whispered, her eyes widening in disbelief. "The man from the storm. You... you were that boy."

"I was," Royce said, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "And I have spent four years looking for the woman who saved my life. Now that I’ve found you, no one will ever put their hands on you again."
