Chapter 6 - The Broken Mirror

By midnight, the precinct was quiet.
Robert Sterling was locked in a holding cell, facing charges of First-Degree Murder, Attempted Capital Murder, Embezzlement, and Evidence Tampering. Marcus Vance had surrendered to police two hours later, confessing his role in locking the bus in exchange for having his mortgage debt cleared.
Julianne Hale was released on bail, facing secondary charges of corporate fraud, her marriage to Andrew shattered beyond repair.
Dana walked back into Saint Jude Children’s Hospital.
The halls were silent, lit only by dim night-lights. She walked down the third-floor corridor to Room 314.
Inside, the room was soft and quiet.
Eli was sleeping peacefully, his small chest rising and falling in a deep, healthy rhythm. His fever was completely gone, his skin color restored to a healthy olive tone.
Sitting in the vinyl armchair beside the bed was Andrew Hale.
He looked ten years older than he had that morning. His tie was loosened, his collar unbuttoned, his head resting in his hands.
Dana knocked softly on the open door frame.
Andrew looked up, blinking groggily. "Dana," he whispered, standing up carefully so as not to wake the boy.
They stepped out into the hallway together.
"It’s over," Dana said quietly. "Sterling confessed. Marcus Vance confirmed everything. You're completely cleared of any criminal involvement, Andrew."
Andrew didn't look relieved. He leaned his head against the glass window of the hallway, looking down at the city lights flickering in the rain.
"I may be cleared of a crime, Dana," Andrew whispered, "but I'm not innocent. My vanity, my cowardice... it almost got my son killed. If I had just faced the truth nine years ago, if I had stood up and taken responsibility instead of paying quiet money..."
"You can't change nine years ago, Andrew," Dana said firmly, putting a hand on his shoulder. "But you’re standing here tonight. That boy upstairs doesn't need a perfect principal. He needs a father who stays."
Andrew looked at her, tears glistening in his eyes. He wiped them away with the back of his hand and nodded slowly.
"Is he going to be okay?" Andrew asked.
"Physically, he’s going to make a full recovery," Dana reported. "Social Services is going to open a temporary guardianship file tomorrow morning. Because of the unusual circumstances, the judge is going to require a formal DNA verification before any permanent custody arrangements are made."
"I don't need a test," Andrew said firmly, his voice finding a strength it hadn't possessed all day. "I know he's my son. I saw his mother's eyes the second he looked at me."

"Then you’d better go back in there," Dana smiled gently. "He’s going to wake up hungry."
Andrew smiled back—a small, tired, but genuine smile—and turned back toward Room 314.
