Chapter 8 - The Fall of the House of Vance

Within four hours of the raid on Warehouse 14, the federal dragnet closed around Victor Vance with breathtaking speed.

Federal arrest warrants, backed by the financial audit data from Sarah Lin and the physical ledgers recovered by Grant and Derek, were executed simultaneously across Chicago. Victor Vance was intercepted by federal agents while stepping out of a private dining club in the Gold Coast district. He didn't resist arrest; the sight of twelve armed marshals and three federal prosecutors made resistance entirely futile.

By evening, news broadcasts across the nation flashed breaking headlines: Chicago Syndicate Leader Arrested in Multi-Million Dollar Trafficking and Racketeering Sweep; Corporate Ties Severed.

Inside the secure drawing room of Grant Holloway’s estate, the television was muted.

Maya sat cross-legged on the plush Persian rug, carefully building a tower out of wooden blocks while seven-month-old Ellie sat happily beside her, chewing on a teething ring provided by the pediatric nurse.

The double doors opened, and Grant walked in. He had changed out of his tactical gear into a fresh shirt, though the exhaustion of a grueling forty-eight hours showed faintly around his eyes.

Maya looked up as he entered.

"Is it over?" she asked quietly.

Grant walked over, sitting down on the rug beside her and placing a gentle hand on her head.

"It's over, Maya," Grant said softly. "Victor Vance, Beverly Vale, and everyone involved with Bright Harbor are in federal custody. They will never be able to hurt you, your sister, or anyone else ever again."

Maya let out a long, shuddering breath—a sound that carried away six months of hidden terror, sleepless nights, and constant fear. A genuine, radiant smile broke across her face for the first time since Grant had met her on State Street.

"And the candy?" Maya asked playfully.

Grant laughed, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a pristine peppermint stick. "Business is temporarily suspended. But I think we can negotiate a private contract."

The doors opened again, and Sarah Lin stepped into the room, holding a thick legal portfolio and beaming from ear to ear.

"Grant, you need to see this," Sarah said, holding up the documents. "The federal judge just granted emergency guardianship and permanent custody petitions for Maya and Ellie. Furthermore, the state child welfare board has officially recognized your private foundation as their legal guardian."

Maya froze. Her dark eyes widened, locking onto Grant.

"Guardianship?" Maya whispered. "Does that mean... we don't have to leave?"

Grant looked at her, his heart swelling with an emotion he hadn't known he was capable of feeling. He reached out, taking her small hand in his.

"It means you never have to leave," Grant said, his voice thick with emotion. "This is your home now, Maya. For as long as you want it."

May you like

Maya didn't say anything. Instead, she leaned forward and wrapped her arms around Grant’s neck, burying her face against his shoulder.

Grant held her tightly, one hand gently shielding her head, while little Ellie crawled over and patted his knee with a sticky hand.
