Chapter 7 - The Purge of the Vipers

By dawn, the storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, crisp blue sky over the Virginia hills.

The estate grounds were swarming with over thirty vehicles from the FBI, State Police, and Federal Marshals. Red and blue emergency lights flashed against the wet white stone of the mansion.

Julian Sterling was loaded into an armored police van in heavy leg irons, facing federal charges of armed home invasion, attempted murder, domestic terrorism, and international arms trafficking. The raid on the docks downtown had been a trap set by Riston and the FBI; Julian’s men had been caught red-handed attempting to move illegal weaponry through Sterling shipping containers.

In the grand drawing room, Evelyn Sterling sat on the velvet sofa, surrounded by three federal agents.

She no longer looked like an aristocrat. Her white Chanel suit was wrinkled, her face pale and drawn, her hands trembling as she signed a stack of federal cooperation agreements. The evidence found on Julian’s encrypted phone directly linked Evelyn to funding the armed raid on the estate.

I walked into the drawing room carrying Clara in my arms. Riston walked beside me, holding a thick leather folder containing the final corporate settlement documents.

Evelyn looked up as we approached. Her eyes were hollow, completely stripped of the arrogant cruelty that had defined her for eighty years.

"Riston..." she whispered, her voice barely audible over the hum of the police radios outside. "Please... don't let them put me in a facility..."

Riston stood before her, looking down at his grandmother without a single flicker of anger, hatred, or pity. There was only absolute indifference.

"You have two choices, Evelyn," Riston said smoothly, placing the folder on the table before her. "Option one: you sign over every remaining personal asset, house, land deed, and trust fund to the Clara Sterling Pediatric Medical Foundation, and you agree to spend the remainder of your life under quiet medical supervision at our private estate in New Mexico."

Evelyn swallowed hard, her hand trembling over the pen. "And... and option two?"

"Option two," I spoke up, stepping forward into her line of sight, "is federal prison. For conspiracy to commit murder, child endangerment, and treason. At your age, you will die behind bars in a grey jumpsuit, known to the world only as a convicted felon."

Evelyn stared at me. She looked down at Clara, who was sleeping peacefully in my arms, completely untouched by the violence that had shaken her world. For the first time in her life, Evelyn Sterling recognized total, absolute defeat.

She picked up the pen with trembling fingers and signed her name on every line of the document.

When she finished, she set the pen down, her shoulders slumping forward as if her very spine had dissolved.

"Take her away," Riston ordered quietly to the federal agents.

The two agents helped Evelyn to her feet and escorted her out through the glass doors. She didn't look back once.

As the police cars drove away down the long gravel driveway, taking the last remnants of the old, toxic Sterling dynasty with them, Riston turned to me, wrapping his arms around my waist and pulling me close against his chest.

"It's over," he whispered, pressing his lips gently against my temple. "They're gone. All of them."

"Not all of them," I smiled softly, looking down at our daughter, who opened her bright, clear eyes and let out a tiny, soft yawn. "The real Sterlings are right here."
