Chapter 9 - The Return to Miller’s

Six months later.
It was a crisp autumn morning in Georgia.
The gravel parking lot of Miller’s Roadside Diner was full of local trucks, family sedans, and the familiar smell of frying bacon and fresh coffee lingering in the air.
The front door jingled as Daniel and Lily walked inside.
Daniel wore a comfortable brown sweater, looking relaxed, healthy, and happy. Lily, now nine years old, was taller, her bright eyes scanning the diner until they locked onto the familiar red vinyl booth in the corner.
The entire diner didn't stop this time. There were no flashing police lights, no drawn weapons, and no harsh words. It was just an ordinary, cozy morning in a small-town diner.
Mrs. Miller walked out from the kitchen, holding a fresh pot of coffee. When she saw who had just walked in, her face split into a wide, joyous smile.
"Well, as I live and breathe!" Mrs. Miller declared, setting the coffee pot down on the counter and walking over with her arms wide. "Look at you two!"
She gave Lily a giant, grandmotherly hug before turning to give Daniel a warm embrace.
"Agent Carter! Or should I say Professor Carter now?" Mrs. Miller chuckled. "Ethan—I mean, Sheriff Brooks—told me you were teaching up at the academy in Virginia!"
"Just 'Daniel' is fine, Mrs. Miller," Daniel laughed softly. "And yes, teaching is going great. But we were driving down to Florida for Lily's fall break, and we couldn't pass through Georgia without stopping at our favorite breakfast spot."
"Sit! Sit right down in your booth!" Mrs. Miller insisted, dusting off the table with her apron.
As they sat down, the front door jingled again.
Sheriff Ethan Brooks walked in, wearing his polished brown sheriff's uniform, looking confident, capable, and proud. When he saw Daniel, his eyes lit up.
"Special Agent Carter!" Brooks walked over, extending his hand for a firm, respectful handshake. "It is so good to see you, sir!"
"It’s good to see you too, Sheriff," Daniel said, taking his hand. "I’ve been reading the regional reports. You've done an incredible job cleaning up the department here."
"We're doing our best, sir," Brooks said modestly, looking at Lily with a warm smile. "Hey there, Lily. How's Virginia treating you?"

"It’s awesome!" Lily said excitedly. "My dad built me a treehouse, and I learned how to ride my bike without training wheels!"
"Is that so?" Brooks smiled. "Well, you tell your dad to make sure he takes you to the local park while you're in town. We just dedicated a new playground down by the river."
