Chapter 4 - The Chamber Beneath the Roots

By 4:00 a.m., the tranquil grounds of the Warren estate resembled a military staging ground.
Three county sheriff cruisers, a forensic science van, and a heavy structural rescue unit were parked across the snow-covered lawn, their red and blue emergency lights sweeping rhythmically through the bare oak trees.
Dr. Mitchell had returned, sitting with Ethan in the kitchen while two state forensic investigators sealed off the nursery on the second floor.
In the basement, Sheriff Miller, David, and a team of state police search-and-rescue technicians stood around the old coal chute in the far corner of the cellar.
The technicians had used an industrial demolition saw to cut through the false black drywall ceiling, revealing a hidden steel staircase that spiraled downward into the earth beneath the back patio—far deeper than the house's original foundation walls.
"Air quality check complete," a technician reported, adjusting his respirator mask. "Oxygen levels are normal, but temperature down there is hovering around 35 degrees. High concentration of isopropyl alcohol and clinical-grade preservatives."
"David," Sheriff Miller said, placing a firm hand on David’s shoulder. "You stay up here with your son. Let my men go down first."
"No," David said. His voice was no longer trembling. A terrifying, crystal-clear focus had settled over him. "I'm going down. That's my house. That's my family."
Miller saw the unyielding determination in David’s eyes and sighed, nodding to the technicians. "Keep him behind point. Weapons drawn."
They descended the steel spiral staircase.
The air grew progressively colder with every step, smelling sharply of frost, ozone, and clean, sterile plastic. At the bottom of the stairs lay a sixty-foot reinforced concrete corridor, illuminated by soft, recessed LED strip lights along the floor.
At the end of the corridor stood a heavy, vault-like airlock door made of polished stainless steel.
The door was standing three inches ajar—its hydraulic seals broken when the alarm had sounded twenty minutes earlier.
David pushed past the lead technician, shoving the heavy steel door open with his shoulder.
The room inside was a fully equipped, top-tier intensive care unit—but unlike any hospital room David had ever seen.
The walls were lined with monitors displaying continuous EEG waves, cardiac rhythms, and oxygenation levels. In the center of the room sat a massive, glass-domed stasis pod, surrounded by automated intravenous infusion pumps, synthetic blood purifiers, and a customized neurological monitoring array.
The glass dome of the pod had slid back automatically.
Inside the pod, lying on a heated gel mattress, was a woman.
Her skin was pale, smooth, devoid of any age lines or marks, her long dark hair spread out over the white pillow like a halo. Wires were attached to her temples, and a thin, flexible breathing tube was inserted into her throat, connected to a silent, state-of-the-art ventilator.
David dropped to his knees beside the pod, his hands flying to his mouth.
It was Sarah.
She wasn't a corpse. She wasn't a memory.
Her chest was rising and falling in a slow, deep, machine-assisted rhythm. Her fingers—slender and pale—were warm to the touch, resting softly against the white sheets.
On a digital monitor mounted above her head, a green line pulsed steadily:
HEART RATE: 48 BPM. BRAINWAVE ACTIVITY: LOW-FREQUENCY REM SLEEP.
"She's alive," David wept, pressing his forehead against the side of the glass pod, his tears falling onto her hand. "My God... Sarah... she's alive..."
"Mr. Warren," the lead state investigator whispered, examining a series of thick, leather-bound medical ledgers resting on a stainless-steel desk beside the pod. "You need to look at this."
David wiped his eyes, forcing himself to stand up. He walked over to the desk.
The ledger was stamped with the emblem of Apex Bio-Therapeutics.
The first entry was dated two days before Ethan was born:
SUBJECT: SARAH WARREN. PROJECT: LAZARUS-8. PATIENT COMPLIANCE: NON-CONSENSUAL. AMNIOTIC EMBOLISM SIMULATION PREPARED FOR HUSBAND. EXPERIMENTAL NEURO-STASIS COMMENCING POST-DELIVERY.
David flipped through the pages, his horror deepening with every word.
Dr. Arthur Vance hadn't tried to save Sarah’s life. He had targeted her. Sarah possessed a rare, genetic mutation in her cellular repair enzymes—a one-in-a-billion blood profile that Apex Bio-Therapeutics had been secretly tracking for a decade.
Vance had faked her death during the C-section, substituted a weighted cadaver in a sealed casket for her funeral, and transferred her straight to this subterranean chamber beneath the house he had specifically sold to David.
And for eighteen months, while David grieved upstairs, while Ethan took his first steps in the nursery above her head, Sarah had been kept in a suspended, artificial coma—her blood harvested weekly to create experimental regenerative serums for elite, wealthy buyers across the globe.
"Why?" David screamed into the quiet room, smashing his fist onto the stainless-steel desk. "Why put her under my house?!"
"Because," a smooth, cultured voice spoke from the shadows of the airlock doorway, "a mother's neural activity remains uniquely synchronized with her offspring. And we needed her brainwaves to remain stable during the extraction phase."

David turned around.
Standing in the doorway, held at gunpoint by two state troopers, was Dr. Arthur Vance.
