Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Siege

By seven o'clock that evening, the story had broken across every major news network in New York.

“THE RUNAWAY BRIDE WHO WAS LOCKED AWAY: WHITMAN FAMILY ACCUSED OF FELONY CONSPIRACY AT MIDTOWN WEDDING.”

Photos of Emily—barefoot, bloodied, and ripped out of her silk slip—walking out of the luxury hotel had gone viral on TikTok and Twitter, gaining over forty million views in three hours. Society pages were in total meltdown. The Whitman Group’s stock had already plummeted fourteen percent in after-hours trading.

Inside the glass-walled penthouse board room of Vance & Sterling on Park Avenue, Emily sat at the head of a twenty-foot mahogany conference table. She was dressed in a pair of clean dark jeans and a navy cashmere sweater provided by Julian’s chief of staff. Her hair was pulled back into a neat, high ponytail, highlighting the faint purple bruise along her jawline.

Across the table sat Daniel Whitman, his mother Eleanor, and three senior corporate defense lawyers who looked like they hadn't breathed in hours.

Daniel looked hollowed out. His tuxedo was gone, replaced by a rumpled white shirt with the top three buttons undone. His eyes were bloodshot, staring fixedly at the stack of legal documents Julian had laid out before them.

"This is extortion!" Eleanor roared, slamming her jewel-encrusted hand onto the mahogany surface. "Julian, you are taking advantage of a hysterical girl to launch a hostile takeover of my family's company!"

"Keep your voice down, Eleanor," Julian commanded smoothly, not even looking up from his tablet. "You are currently sitting in my office as a courtesy before the District Attorney issues a formal warrant for your arrest. If you raise your voice again, I will have the NYPD detail waiting in the lobby step up to execute that warrant immediately."

Eleanor choked on her rage, her lips turning pale as she sank back into her leather chair.

"Emily," Daniel pleaded, his voice cracking as he reached across the table toward her. "Please. Look at me. I didn't know. I swear to God on my life, I didn't know they locked you in that room! My mother told me you left a note! She showed me a text message from your phone saying you couldn't go through with it!"

Emily slowly raised her gaze to meet his. "She took my phone from the bridal suite while I was getting my hair done, Daniel. Did you even try to call me back? Did you check my apartment? Or did you just accept Vanessa’s hand and walk down the aisle because it was easier than standing up to your mother?"

Daniel swallowed hard, his jaw working silently. He had no answer.

"You knew who I was for four years, Daniel," Emily continued, her voice cold and measured. "You knew how hard I worked to build my career. You knew how much I gave up to fit into your world. And when I disappeared for two hours, you didn't look for me. You replaced me."

"It was about the merger, Daniel!" Eleanor hissed, turning on her son in desperation. "The Reed Group assets were critical! If we didn't announce the union today, the creditors would have pulled our liquidity lines by Monday morning! I did what had to be done to save our family!"

"By committing felony kidnapping, Mrs. Whitman?" Julian interjected, sliding a blue folder across the table. "This is a copy of the wire transfer trail linking your offshore trust to Security Chief Briggs. This is the forensic report from the precinct showing the deadbolt mechanism was tampered with electronically from the hotel's master console at 9:14 AM."

The Whitman family's lead lawyer cleared his throat nervously. "Mr. Vance... what are your client's terms for a private settlement?"

Julian leaned back in his chair, tapping his silver pen against his chin. "First, Eleanor Whitman will immediately resign from her position as Chairwoman of the Board of the Whitman Group, effective midnight."

"Never!" Eleanor shrieked.

"Second," Julian continued, ignoring her entirely, "the Whitman Group will surrender fifty-one percent of its voting stock to an independent trust managed by Miss Emily Carter, as restitution for criminal damages and emotional distress."

Daniel gasped. "Fifty-one percent? That’s... that’s complete control of the company!"

"Third," Emily spoke up, her clear voice cutting through the heavy air.

Everyone at the table turned to look at her.

"You will return my grandmother's jewelry within the hour," Emily said, staring directly into Daniel's broken eyes. "You will pay every vendor who worked on that wedding out of your personal accounts. And you, Daniel, will never contact me, my sister, or my school ever again."

"Emily, please..." Daniel tears finally spilled over his eyes. "We can fix this. I love you. I'll leave my mother. I'll walk away from the company—"

May you like

"You had your chance to stand up for me at the altar steps, Daniel," Emily said, standing up from the conference table. "You chose your suit. You chose your mother. Now you can live with both of them."

She turned and walked out of the boardroom, her sneakers quiet against the plush carpet, leaving the Whitman empire crashing down behind her.
