Chapter 3 - The Family Syndicate

By morning, news of Margaret Ellis’s arrest had sent shockwaves through the city's high society. However, the Ellises were resilient in their wickedness. Arthur Ellis Sr., Margaret’s husband and a retired municipal judge with deep political ties, activated every dirty favor he was owed.

While I was still recovering in the high-security wing, my chief legal clerk, Brenda, brought a encrypted tablet into my room.

“Your Honor, Arthur Ellis just filed an emergency ex-parte petition in the County Family Court,” Brenda reported, her eyes ablaze with indignation. “They are claiming you are mentally unfit due to postpartum psychosis and heavy medication. They’ve attached a falsified psychiatric report signed by a doctor on the hospital board.”

I looked at my two sweet babies sleeping peacefully in their twin bassinets next to my bed. Noah had a tuft of dark hair; Grace had tiny, delicate fingers that held onto my thumb even in her sleep.

“They want immediate temporary custody of both infants,” Brenda added. “And the judge assigned to the emergency hearing is Judge Robert Vance—no relation to the Marshal, but a long-time golf partner of Arthur Ellis.”

“They’re moving fast,” I murmured, taking a slow, measured breath to manage the throbbing pain from my incision. “They think because I’m tied to a hospital bed, I can’t defend my children. They think local politics trump federal jurisdiction.”

“What are your orders, Judge Monroe?”

“Call the Regional U.S. Attorney,” I commanded, my eyes hardening into flint. “Tell him to pull the sealed wiretaps from Operation Ironclad. The ones where Arthur Ellis and Judge Robert Vance discuss bribing jury foremen. It’s time to clean house in this city.”

That afternoon, Natalie Ellis—Andrew’s sister—arrived at the hospital, dressed in designer maternity clothes she hadn't earned, accompanied by two private security guards. She walked down the corridor with an arrogant smirk, holding an emergency court order signed by Judge Vance demanding the immediate surrender of baby Noah.

She thought she was coming to pick up her new baby. She didn't know the FBI was waiting around the corner.
