Chapter 1 - The Poison in the Glass

The silence in the marble corridor was absolute, so dense that the quiet dripping of blood onto the polished stone sounded like rainfall.

Enzo Marchetti’s ice-cold gaze followed Adeline’s eyes to the elderly woman trembling near the open mahogany doors of the ballroom. It was Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper who had served the Marchetti family for thirty-two years—a gentle woman with silver hair, arthritic hands, and a grandson currently in the intensive care unit of Chicago General Hospital.

"Adeline," Enzo’s voice was a low velvet blade that sliced through the suffocating air. "Answer me. Why did you take the glass from Camilla’s hand?"

Camilla scoffed, adjusting her sapphire necklace with a dismissive flick of her wrist. "She’s a thief, Enzo! Or simply incompetent. She rushed up to me like a lunatic, grabbed the crystal flute out of my fingers, and poured it straight into the potted ficus. It was humiliating! In front of Senator Vance and Judge Holloway! I was merely enforcing discipline in a household that clearly lacks it."

Adeline kept her lips pressed tight. Her ribs throbbed where she had backed into the wall, and the heavy Italian wool of Enzo’s jacket was quickly absorbing the blood from her lacerated forearm. But her eyes remained fixed on Mrs. Gable, whose pale face was washed in sheer, unadulterated terror.

Enzo didn't look at his fiancée. He didn't look at the two hundred high-society guests craning their necks from the ballroom. He stepped closer to Adeline, his towering six-foot-three frame casting a protective shadow over her trembling form.

He reached out, his long, leather-gloved fingers gently taking her chin, lifting her face so she had no choice but to look into his dark grey eyes—eyes that had commanded Chicago’s underground empire since he was twenty-five years old.

"You aren't afraid of the riding crop," Enzo said softly, his thumb brushing a speck of blood from her cheek. "You aren't afraid of Camilla. You're protecting someone."

Adeline’s breath caught in her throat.

"Look at me, Adeline," Enzo commanded, though his tone held a strange, unexpected tenderness that sent a ripple of murmurs through the watching crowd. "If you speak the truth in my house, no one on this earth can harm you. Not Camilla. Not her family. Not my lieutenants. Speak."

Adeline swallowed hard, her voice coming out as a raspy, cracked whisper. "The champagne... it smelled like sweet almonds, sir."

A sharp, collective gasp echoed from the ballroom doors.

Camilla’s aristocratic face flushed a dangerous, violent red. "What absolute rubbish! Sweet almonds? She’s trying to insinuate—"

"Potassium cyanide," Enzo interrupted calmly, his eyes narrowing to razor-thin slits as he turned slowly toward the ficus plant six feet away.

The leaves of the lush green plant were already beginning to curl and discolor where the liquid had seeped into the soil.

The atmosphere in the corridor dropped into sub-zero temperatures. The powerful bankers, politicians, and mob bosses standing near the doorway took a synchronized step backward. Cyanide. A chemical weapon of cowards and assassins.

Enzo walked over to the potted plant, crouched down, and picked up a single fallen leaf that was turning black at the edges. He stood up, turning his full, terrifying attention back to Camilla Ashford.

"You brought your own private vintage tonight, didn't you, Camilla?" Enzo asked, his voice disturbingly conversational. "A bottle of 1996 Dom Pérignon from your father’s cellar. You refused to let the kitchen staff touch it. You poured it yourself."

"Enzo, you can't possibly believe this lying little street rat!" Camilla shrieked, her voice cracking as her composure broke into jagged pieces. "Why on earth would I poison my own drink?!"

"It wasn't meant for you," a quiet, broken voice called out from the doorway.

Mrs. Gable stepped forward, her hands shaking so violently she had to hold onto the doorframe. Tears streamed down her wrinkled cheeks, cutting clean paths through her powder.

"Mrs. Gable, be quiet!" Camilla snapped, her eyes wide with a manic, warning glare.

"No, Miss Ashford," the old woman wept, dropping to her knees right there in front of the guests. "I won't let you ruin this girl! Don't let her hurt Adeline, Master Enzo! Miss Ashford came into the pantry twenty minutes ago. She... she put two drops from a glass vial into the glass she had poured for you."

The corridor erupted into chaos. Whispers turned into shouts. Senator Vance immediately backed into the ballroom, pulling his wife behind him.

"She threatened my grandson!" Mrs. Gable sobbed, her chest heaving. "She said if I didn't hand that glass to you, Master Enzo, she would have her father cut off the funding for my grandson's life support at the hospital! I was going to do it... God forgive me, I was going to bring you the tray! But Adeline saw the vial in Miss Ashford's purse. She knew what was happening. She took the tray from my hands and poured the glass out before Miss Ashford could force you to drink it!"

Enzo stood motionless in the center of the hall.

The entire puzzle snapped into place with terrifying clarity. Camilla hadn't been humiliated because a maid took a glass out of her hand. She had been enraged because a twenty-two-year-old girl had just foiled an assassination attempt right under the noses of Chicago's elite.

Camilla stared at the sobbing housekeeper, then at the blackening leaves of the ficus, and finally at Enzo. Her arrogance evaporated, replaced by the wild, cornered panic of an exposed predator.

"Enzo... listen to me," Camilla stammered, taking a step toward him, her hands outstretched. "My father... he forced me! The Ashford family is bankrupt, Enzo! The syndicate was going to seize our lands! If you died before the wedding, the draft agreement gave my family control of the Marchetti shipping routes—"

"Dante," Enzo said flatly.

Out of the shadows near the grand staircase, his chief enforcer—a six-foot-five brute with a scar running from his eye to his jaw—stepped forward silently.

"Sir?"

"The engagement is over," Enzo said, taking the leather riding crop off the floor and snapping it in half with his bare hands. He tossed the broken pieces at Camilla’s feet. "Take Miss Ashford to the basement vault. Call her father. Tell him Arthur Ashford has three hours to hand over every asset he owns in the state of Illinois, or I will personally deliver his daughter's body to his doorstep."

"ENZO! NO! ENZO, PLEASE!" Camilla screamed as Dante grabbed her by her upper arms, dragging her kicking and shrieking down the service hallway toward the iron doors of the sub-basement. "YOU CAN'T DO THIS TO AN ASHFORD! MY FATHER WILL KILL YOU! ENZO!"

Her screams faded into the depths of the mansion.

Enzo didn't look back. He walked straight toward Adeline, who was leaning against the marble wall, her face pale from blood loss, her hands clutching his dark coat around her shoulders.

Without saying a word, the most feared mob boss in Chicago reached down, slipped one arm behind her back and the other beneath her knees, and lifted the new maid effortlessly into his arms.
