Chapter 4 - The Confrontation

The penthouse apartment was filled with the soft ambient light of a modern city skyline.
Samantha stood in front of her floor-to-ceiling mirror, adjusting a sleek red dress, her dark hair falling in loose waves over her shoulders. When the front door unlocked and slammed shut, she turned with a wide, dazzling smile.
"Finally!" she gasped, walking toward me with her arms open. "Where have you been all day, Mark? You didn't answer my texts, your phone was broken, and—"
She stopped dead in her tracks when she saw my face.
I was wearing the same clothes from yesterday—rumpled, stained with rain and coffee. My eyes were bloodshot, my jaw covered in dark stubble.
"Mark?" she asked, her voice dropping its playful tone. "What happened to you?"
I reached into my coat pocket, pulled out the heavy velvet box containing the two-thousand-dollar diamond bracelet I had purchased for her forty-eight hours ago, and threw it violently across the room. It struck the glass coffee table with a loud crack, bouncing onto the rug.
Samantha flinched, her eyes widening in shock. "Are you insane?! What is wrong with you?"
"She left," I whispered, my voice ragged. "Claire took Hope and left. The house is completely empty."
Samantha took a slow breath. Her expression shifted rapidly from confusion to a subtle, calculated calm. She walked over to the couch, picked up her glass of white wine, and took a small sip.
"Mark... calm down," she said softly, stepping closer to me and reaching out to touch my arm. "Look at me. I know it’s a shock, but... isn't this what we wanted? You were miserable at home. You told me every night how exhausted you were, how the baby wouldn't stop crying, how Claire didn't pay attention to you anymore."
I stared at her, feeling as though a cold bucket of water had been dumped over my head.
"She didn't pay attention to me because she was recovering from a major medical procedure and feeding our daughter every two hours, Samantha!" I roared, stepping away from her touch as if her hands were made of fire. "She was drowning! And instead of helping my wife, I was coming here to sleep with you!"
Samantha’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits, the sweet, attentive lover act instantly evaporating.
"Don't you dare put this on me, Mark Harrington," she spat, her voice cold and sharp as a razor. "I didn't force you into my bed. I didn't hold a gun to your head and make you swipe your credit card at Tiffany’s. You came to me because you were weak, selfish, and cowardly. You wanted a fantasy, and you paid for it."
"I ruined my family for you," I sobbed, covering my face with my hands.
"No," Samantha snapped, walking up to me and poking her manicured finger hard against my chest. "You ruined your family for yourself. Because you thought you were smart enough to have both. You thought Claire was too stupid, too tired, and too dependent on you to ever leave."
She pointed toward the front door.
"Get out of my apartment, Mark."
"Samantha—"
"Get out!" she screamed, her face contorted in rage. "Go back to your empty house and cry about the baby you abandoned! But don't you ever come back here blaming me for the mess you made!"

I backed out of the doorway, the heavy oak door slamming shut in my face, locking with a sharp, definitive click.
I stood in the carpeted hallway of the luxury apartment building, completely stripped of my dignity, my mistress, my wife, and my child.
