Chapter 10 - The Unbroken Ground

That evening, I returned to the farm.

The summer sun was setting over the western hills, painting the sky in breathtaking shades of deep violet, fiery orange, and soft rose.

I walked down the wooden porch steps without my cane, my boots sinking into the cool, rich grass of the front lawn. My legs felt strong, grounded, and whole beneath me.

I walked down to the edge of the lower pasture where a new garden of wild lavender and sunflowers had been planted. The evening air was sweet, cool, and clean, filled with the gentle chirping of crickets and the soft rustle of oak leaves in the summer breeze.

I knelt down in the grass, pressing my palms flat against the earth.

Two years ago, my hands had been pressed against hot, unforgiving concrete while barbecue sauce matted my hair and classic rock played over my destruction. I had been invisible, dismissed, and left to die in my own driveway.

Now, the earth beneath my hands was alive, soft, and cool.

I stood up, taking a deep, long breath of the sweet country air, feeling the warm sunlight rest on my face like a blessing.

My body had been poisoned, my trust had been shattered, and my world had been burned to the ground. But from the ashes of that dark driveway, I had built a fortress of truth, justice, and unyielding strength.

I turned and walked back toward the warm, glowing lights of my home, my steps steady, my head held high, completely, utterly, and forever free.
