Chapter 9 - THE ROAD TO REDEMPTION

The journey to the capital was not a peaceful procession. It was an armored war along the high-speed arteries of the Italian highway.

Despite the heavy police escort provided by Inspector Rossi and a convoy of Nicholas’s custom armored SUVs, the underworld launched a desperate final strike. As our convoy merged onto the outskirts of Rome, heavy transport trucks plowed through the highway guardrails, attempting to crush the escort vehicles.

Automatic gunfire shattered the afternoon quiet.

"Get down!" Nicholas roared, pulling me into the reinforced footwell of our vehicle as heavy rounds slammed into the bulletproof glass, spider-webbing the dark tint.

Leo was safe, hidden away at a fortified lighthouse sanctuary under the guard of fifty loyal men. It was just Nicholas and me in the rear seat.

A mercenary on a high-powered motorcycle roared up alongside our vehicle, raising a magnetic sticky-bomb toward our rear window. Nicholas didn't hesitate. He hit the power window switch, cracked the armored glass just two inches, and shoved the barrel of a short-nosed shotgun into the gap.

BOOM.

The blast blew the assassin off his bike, sending the machine cartwheeling down the asphalt in a fireball.

"Mara! Take the wheel!" Nicholas commanded, scrambling toward the rear cargo area.

Without a second of hesitation, I climbed over the center console into the driver’s seat. Three months of evasive driving lessons that Nicholas had forced me to take paid off. I gripped the wheel with white knuckles, slamming the accelerator to 110 miles per hour, swerving around burning wreckage while Nicholas leaned out the rear cargo hatch, laying down suppressing fire on two chasing pickup trucks with lethal, military precision.

We operated as a single, unstoppable unit—I drove through the chaos, and he eliminated every threat that closed in.

Forty minutes of adrenaline-soaked terror later, our battered, bullet-riddled SUV crashed through the security gates of the Palace of Justice in Rome, coming to a halt inside the heavily guarded government compound.

Under the watchful eyes of the High Magistrates, Vatican representatives, and dozens of press cameras, I walked into the grand marble hall. I wore a sharp black suit, my hair cascading down my shoulders, completely unbothered by the chaos we had just survived.

Nicholas stood directly behind me, a towering, dark shadow of absolute protection.

"Miss Mara Vance," the Chief Magistrate announced over the microphone, looking at me over his spectacles. "Are you entirely certain you wish to execute a full, unconditional renunciation of the Moretti estate, valued at 2.4 billion Euros? Once signed, the funds will be surrendered permanently to the State Victims of Crime and Orphanage Fund."

I picked up the heavy gold pen. My hand didn't shake. My breath remained steady.

"That money was bought with the blood, tears, and terror of innocent people—including my mother," I declared, my voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I don't need a single Euro of blood money. My real fortune is standing right behind me."

I pressed the pen to the parchment and signed my name with a swift, decisive stroke.

CRISP.

A sharp, sudden round of applause erupted from Inspector Rossi, quickly spreading until the entire gallery was clapping. Julian Moretti's final trap had been dismantled. By surrendering the money to the state, I had stripped the inheritance of its value to the mobs. The target on my back vanished into thin air.

Freedom—true, absolute, unyielding freedom—was finally ours.
